2018 Domaine Rossignol-Trapet En Primeur
We are extremely pleased to be offering you 2018 red burgundies from Rossignol-Trapet en primeur for the first time this year. The domaine will need no introduction for some and reams has been written about them, so we will focus on our impression of this wonderful grower in Gevrey-Chambertin.
Brothers Nicolas and David Rossignol have run the domaine in Gevrey since 1990, but their father originally hailed from Volnay and they still have vineyard holdings in Beaune. We don't think it too fanciful to imagine their Gevrey wines taste just like they were made by native 'Volnaysien'; elegant and beautifully balanced. Even in warmer vintages, they emphasise freshness and balancing acidity, with the wines often showing red as well as black fruit aromas.
Each year, tasting their grand cru wines is a breathtaking highlight, difficult as they are to taste from barrel. If talk of elegance gives the impression these are polished and in anyway over-worked wines, think again. The brothers were amongst the pioneers of biodynamics (working this way for nearly twenty years) and the wines have the characteristic 'energy' which we experience so often at BD estates.
As well as this assiduous, thoughtful approach to their winemaking, they are blessed with some extraordinary parcels of aged vines. The average age in their Gevrey Vieilles Vignes is 50 to 80 years, contributing to the extraordinary purity of fruit we find here. There is nothing showy or overly-concentrated here...just an understated but brilliant charm, which Nicolas himself displays each time we meet him. The premier and grand cru wines are of the highest order and we cannot recommend them highly enough.
Offered in very limited quantities, on allocation.

"Cask sample. Savoury and sweet, dark cherry with a lovely sweetness of fruit. Leather and spice and such power that is carried really effortlessly. A very very long finish – spice laden with dark fruit – incredibly long. 18 points." Alistair Cooper MW, Jancisrobinson.com Jan 2020 "The 2018 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet of wild strawberry, wilted rose petal, juniper and orange blossom aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate has a fleshy texture on the opening and finely judged acidity. Candied red fruit intermixes with marmalade and a drop of honey toward the finish. A seductive Chapelle Chambertin, although I feel the Latricières-Chambertin is imbued with greater nobility. 2023 - 2045. 92-94 points." Neal Martin, Vinous.com Jan 2020 Close

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru comes across as one of the most austere at this point in time; it may be entering a sultry stage of its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with quite chalky tannins. An angular Clos Prieur with a slight attenuation toward the pointed finish. I would like to see a little more flesh develop here. 2022 - 2036. 89-91 points." Neal Martin, Vinous.com Jan 2020 Close

"Cask sample. Such freshness here with lively cranberry and spice. A lithe palate that has a leather, earthy edge and is supported by a zesty driven acidity. Long and focused and very well put together. 17.5 points." Alistair Cooper MW, Jancisrobinson.com Jan 2020 "The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru has an expressive, seductive bouquet of ample red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petal notes; menthol aromas emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite saline and spicy, especially toward the finish, which exerts a gentle grip. Great potential here. 2023 - 2040. 91-93 points." From 60 years old vines. Precise red fruits, fresh and with mineral intensity on palate. Impression of elegance and energy rather than concentration, but the fruit is more accessible than in any year I can recall tasting here. Great development and very good length on the finish for a village wine. RKL "The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from vines averaging 60 years of age, within nine parcels that are representative of the appellation. It has a lovely bouquet of undergrowth scents percolating through red berry fruit that is slightly darker than the Bourgogne Rouge, the 50% whole cluster nicely integrated. The lightly spiced palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and an elegant finish that exerts gentle grip. Give it two or three years in bottle. 89-91 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Concentrated beef stock, mulberry, bilberry and some blueberry fruit aromas on the nose. Richly textured at the front of the palate, with amazingly fine tannins and a long, linear 'pheasant's tail' finish. RKL "The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in 40–50% new oak, offers pretty dark cherry, wild strawberry and undergrowth scents on the nose; a light marine scent emerges with time in the glass, along with a touch of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, well-judged acidity and good density, and it maintains a sense of control all the way through. Quite linear on the finish but displays lovely sapidity on the aftertaste. Excellent. 2022 - 2045. 93-95 points." Neal Martin, Vinous.com Jan 2020 Close
