Domaine Hudelot-Baillet 2018 En Primeur
A rising star of Chambolle-Musigny, Hudelot-Baillet is located in the heart of Chambolle, a few doors along from the 'mairie'. After a career in the French airforce, rugby-mad Breton Dominique LeGruen took over the winemaking here from his father-in-law, former proprietor Joel Hudelot-Baillet, in 2004. The wines have gained steadily in stature ever since.
A newly excavated cellar beneath the existing house and vineyard demonstrates how the results of the harvest are ploughed (quite literally) back into the domaine in the pursuit of quality.
Dominique himself comes across as warm but also intense, energetic and robust (much like the game he loves so much to talk about!). As is so often the case, the character of the winemaker is very evident in the wines. He uses destemming and cool maceration for his red wines, with punching down, remontage and delestage, to extract the supple tannins from the skins rather than the pips. The wines are aged in between a third and a half new oak.
New finds from the top villages of the Côte de Nuits are rare and we were delighted to offer Dominique's wines for the first time last year. Where the 2017s were charming, the 2018s wowed us with their concentration and muscular style...our allocation is very small so we suggest you pounce on these wines whilst you can!
Offered En Primeur, wines due to land in the UK in November 2020.
Prices are ex-VAT per case of 12 bottles, unless otherwise advised. DP = duty-paid ex-London. IB = under bond ex-London.

Smoky dark fruits and a meaty, savoury character on the nose. Dominique says a good deal of the smokiness is from the barrels (Seguin Moreau, 15% new) so this will no doubt decrease in intensity. Powerful tannins (as in 2017) but with a richer vein of dark fruit behind them. RKL "The 2018 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a ripe black cherry and cassis bouquet that is intense but manages to retain just enough freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with red cherry and strawberry mixed with a touch of gingerbread and pain d’épices, leading to a fleshy, easygoing finish. Fine. 86-88 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Very fine, mineral and pure on the nose, with beautiful intense dark fruits. Textured with a silky, rich mid-palate which extends into an exceptionally long finish for a generic wine. This has the weight of Hautes Cotes in 2017, superb. RKL "A slightly more elegant nose combines notes of black cherry and raspberry with those of touches of earth and discreet wood. The slightly finer middle weight flavors possess very good verve while exhibiting nice depth and persistence. This isn’t particularly refined but it’s more refined than the PTG while offering fine complexity. (86-89)/2022+" Burghound "The 2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir has a well-defined, nicely focused nose of dark cherries and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and quite lithe in the mouth, with a slightly chalky-textured finish. Good body for a generic red. 87 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

From a tiny plot next to the Musigny Grand Cru. The location shows in the grand cru levels of intensity of aroma and length on the palate, with tremendous mineral character. Will need 5-7 years to begin to show itself. RKL "There are two used barrels of the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Borniques 1er Cru this year. It has a deep inky color. The bouquet is rather marked by the wood, although it is much more assimilated on the palate, which shows impressive energy and balance. The components still need to come together, but they will do so with a few years in bottle. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

More smoky oak notes and meaty aromas, with plum and black fruits and crushed rock minerality. Very firm but also a step up in elegance from the Vielles Vignes which seems positivley rustic by comparison. Dominique says the terroir here consists of a thin (60-90cm) layer of soil over the bedrock. Excellent, mineral, elegant. RKL "Deep glowing purplish crimson. A hint of smoky reduction at the moment but still bags of rich dark-red fruit and a hint of peony and pepper. The tannins are fabulous: super-fine and very dry. Great precision and purity here. And persistence. GV in this context. Drink 2023 – 2032. 17 points" jancisrobinson.com (JH) "The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru is matured in 30% new oak. It has an opulent, showy bouquet with layers of black cherry, crème de cassis and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and tension and quite structured for a Chambolle, displaying impressive tension toward the vivid finish. Give it three to five years in bottle, because it has a long future. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Riper and more fruit forward than Les Charmes, with meaty-savoury aromas and powerful black fruits. Easy, accessible and very juicy on the palate at the moment. The fruit is the star of this wine...a "crowd-pleaser" and a definite 'buy'. RKL "The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru, which underwent malolactic earlier than the Charmes, has a more backward bouquet and more red fruit, plus a touch of brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with dark-chocolate-tinged red fruit, and here the oak is a little dominant toward the sucrous finish. The Charmes might be the better long-term bet. 91-93 points" points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Beautiful, floral nose, perfumed and elegant already. Excellent length on the palate, with succulent fruit and (gently) mouthwatering acidity...beautifully balanced. From old vines, all above 50 years and many 60-90 years old. RKL "Deep bright purple-crimson. Riper and sweeter than the Bourgogne, seductive Chambolle perfume. Lightly chewy yet smooth tannins. Generous and still fresh. Long, too. GV. Drink 2023 – 2030. 16.5+ points" jancisrobinson.com (JH) "The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in 25% new oak, feels quite rich and opulent on the nose, maybe at the expense of some terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and quite elegant on the finish. Hopefully the aromatics will muster a bit more composure by bottling. 88-90 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com points" Close
