Maison Louis Jadot En Primeur 2018
Jadot's impressive circular winery in Beaune may appear large, but making around 125 wines each year, many fill just one vat or even a few barrels.
Having offered Burgundy en primeur from Domaine Louis Jadot for many years, we took the opportunity of visiting them last month. The ostensible reason was to taste the excellent 2018 vintage, but this was also an opportunity to become better acquainted with the team there and to learn more about one of the most important producers in Burgundy.
We will add a full list of wines after later in the autumn. For the now, the wines below represent those which stood out from a special 'preview' tasting we attended in Beaune in September. We were tremendously impressed by the simplicity and integrity of approach expressed by Pierre-Henry Gagey and winemaker Frederic Barnier. We asked Frederic some (we thought, very clever) technical questions about this winemaking approach. He answered each of them with charming insouciance, referring us back to the terroir. His aim is to intervene as little as possible, to allow each climat to express itself.
This solitary winery worker appeared to be the only person doing actual work; punching down the cap on a vat of fermenting 2019 Pommard, one of just three small vats of this wine.
After the warm growing season in 2018, Frederick blocked the malo-lactic fermentation on his white wines, to retain acidity. This, along with the low intervention approach leaves an impression of elegant, crystalline wines with infinite subtle variations in mineral, fruit or tannic character, all of which come from the vineyard itself. A very effective demonstration of this was a tasting held on the boundary between Puligny and Meursault. Standing in amongst Jadots Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts vines, we tasted the wine itself. We then moved a few feet across the road and we were in the Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru. Two wines made identically but in such distinct styles. With such a rich choice of wines, Jadot's range is like a vinous map of the Cote d'Or. Anyone with a passion for Burgundy could do far worse than use their wines as a guide to understanding the terroirs...it would make for a very pleasurable learning process.
The extensive cellars beneath the Couvent de Jacobins, Jadot's 15th Century converted convent in the centre of Beaune.

(Domaine) "The 2018 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very attractive, pure, well-defined bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberry, sous-bois and light orange pith aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The medium-bodied palate displays supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. A little peppery in style, with a touch of brown spice toward the finish. This is a well-crafted Chapelle-Chambertin. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com "The 2018 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) offers up a lovely bouquet of wild berries, peonies, orange rind, licorice and smoky soil tones. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and slightly angular tannins that will be softened with time. I appreciate the energy and backbone of this Grand Cru. Excellent. 93-95 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com "One of the highlights of the portfolio is the 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru (Domaine Gagey), a lovely wine that bursts with aromas of rose petals, deep red fruits, sweet soil tones, raw cocoa and cinnamon. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with lively acids, considerable concentration and an ample endowment of fine-grained tannin. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and slightly creamy in texture. It feels cohesive, and the sensual finish is very appealing. Plenty of drinking pleasure to be found here. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com "There are ten barrels of the 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot), an excellent wine that unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries, dark chocolate, potpourri and spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, velvety and supple, with a broad and textural attack, fine depth at the core and a lively, nicely defined finish. "The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is a beautiful wine in the making, revealing an incipiently complex bouquet that mingles aromas of smoky berry fruit, cassis and orange rind with nuances of peony, espresso roast, rich soil tones and black truffle. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with excellent concentration, fine structuring tannins that are largely concealed by the wine's wealth of fruit and a long, perfumed finish. 93-95+ points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com "The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet that just pips the Cazetiers for precision and poise. This is detailed and very finely tuned, the oak married perfectly with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and very well-judged acidity, almost sorbet-fresh. The vivacious blood-orange-infused finish seems to shimmer. This is a great Clos Saint-Jacques from Louis Jadot. 94-96 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Great concentration with lemon pith and a fine, dry texture on the palate. One of the most succesful of Jadot's Pulignys in 2018. RKL "The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne 1er Cru has an impressive bouquet of green apples, fresh pear and touches of petrichor, developing light walnut aromas so that it becomes almost Meursault-like. The palate is taut and fresh with a menthol undercurrent, and quite concentrated, displaying good definition and a palpable sense of energy toward the finish. This is excellent. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close
