Maison Louis Jadot En Primeur 2018

Jadot's impressive circular winery in Beaune may appear large, but making around 125 wines each year, many fill just one vat or even a few barrels.

Having offered Burgundy en primeur from Domaine Louis Jadot for many years, we took the opportunity of visiting them last month.  The ostensible reason was to taste the excellent 2018 vintage, but this was also an opportunity to become better acquainted with the team there and to learn more about one of the most important producers in Burgundy.

We will add a full list of wines after later in the autumn.  For the now, the wines below represent those which stood out from a special 'preview' tasting we attended in Beaune in September. We were tremendously impressed by the simplicity and integrity of approach expressed by Pierre-Henry Gagey and winemaker Frederic Barnier. We asked Frederic some (we thought, very clever) technical questions about this winemaking approach.  He answered each of them with charming insouciance, referring us back to the terroir.  His aim is to intervene as little as possible, to allow each climat to express itself.

This solitary winery worker appeared to be the only person doing actual work; punching down the cap on a vat of fermenting 2019 Pommard, one of just three small vats of this wine.

After the warm growing season in 2018, Frederick blocked the malo-lactic fermentation on his white wines, to retain acidity.  This, along with the low intervention approach leaves an impression of elegant, crystalline wines with infinite subtle variations in mineral, fruit or tannic character, all of which come from the vineyard itself.  A very effective demonstration of this was a tasting held on the boundary between Puligny and Meursault.  Standing in amongst Jadots Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts vines, we tasted the wine itself.  We then moved a few feet across the road and we were in the Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru.  Two wines made identically but in such distinct styles.  With such a rich choice of wines, Jadot's range is like a vinous map of the Cote d'Or.  Anyone with a passion for Burgundy could do far worse than use their wines as a guide to understanding the terroirs...it would make for a very pleasurable learning process.

Cras' relates to the clay soils here. Less intensity than Bourcherottes, but fine aromas and a delicacy, fresh fruits, soft and delicate tannins, hard to define. Rkl £One of the most serious and potentially long-lived of Jadot's cuvées from the Beaune hillside this year is the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Aux Cras (Domaine Gagey), a lovely wine that opens in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis, spices and orange rind, with only hints of the savory complexity to come. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and racy, with fine-grained tannins, lively acids and a long, nicely defined finish. 91-93+ points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com Close

Floral and honeyed on the nose with almond and hazelnut aromas, lovely minerality on the palate. According to Pierre-Henry Gagey the rainfall levels in the winter in Beaune were perfect to sustain the vines through the hot summer and this really shows here. RKL "The 2018 Beaune Les Bressandes 1er Cru has a fragrant, floral, incense-infused bouquet of blood orange and light marmalade scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins matched by fine acidity, pure fruit and well-judged acidity, leading to a creamy, dark-chocolate-tinged finish. Excellent. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

South-facing, at the top of the slope, clay and calcareous soils. Very expressive, limestone tension evident but there is also plenty of fruit opulence, fine and mineral on the nose, exceptionally fine tannins. RKL "Jadot's 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) soars from the glass with a generous bouquet of ripe cherries, fruit compote and licorice, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and nicely defined, with appealing purity of fruit and a long, well-defined finish. 90-92 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com Close

Structured on the palate, citrus lime fruits with great definition and structure, this will be long-lived and deliver much of the richness of a Meursault, gv. RKL "The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Le Clos Blanc (Domaine Gagey) was a little less put together when I tasted it than the elegant Bressandes, its pretty bouquet of pear, peach, white flowers and almonds giving way to a medium to full-bodied, succulent but open-knit palate that will likely come together with further élevage. 90-92 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com Close

From Maison Jadot. Tight, not showing much on the nose at present, but the impressive fruit purity suggests lots to come. RKL "The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has an impressively detailed bouquet of mineral-infused black fruit, pressed iris flower and light iodine aromas. The palate is full of energy, the blood-orange-infused red fruit quite effervescent in the mouth. Palpable energy and a sense of frisson toward the persistent finish. Superb. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com "The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes (Domaine Gagey) wafts from the glass a superb bouquet peonies, cherries, red berries, rose petals, bergamot, white tea and rock salt. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with lively acids and refined tannins cloaked in a succulent core of fruit, concluding with a long and perfumed finish. This is especially good this year and well worth seeking out. 92-94 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com Close

A 'buy'. This has Grand Cru levels of concentration. Energetic and fresh on the nose, lots of concentration, finely chiselled, great length, much more successful than the Pulignys. RKL "The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru was showing more reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel, compared directly against the regular Morgeot from Jadot. The palate is well balanced and conveys a fine sense of energy. Quite effervescent in the first half, but it takes its eye off the ball in the second and does not deliver the tension and nervosité that I was hoping for. Maybe there will be some melioration once the blend is completed and the wine is in bottle. 89-91? points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

RKL "The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet en Cailleret 1er Cru is less expressive on the nose at the moment but finely detailed with more mineralité than its Chassagne siblings, offering crushed rocks mixed with yellow flower and honeysuckle aromas. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity. Intense, full of energy and cohesive, leading into a beautiful, pure orange-zest-tinged finish with pralines on the aftertaste.
