From a small 1er Cru site which is almost a monopole of Drouhin Laroze (no other growers own enough here to bottle the wine on its own). Located just in front of Mazis-Chambertin. 20% in new oak. Concentrated dark fruits but more elegant than expected in 2018, with very fine tannins giving a complex, creamy textured effect on the palate (some definite similarities with Mazis). RKL "The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of red currant, cranberry and light sous-bois aromas, all very focused and nicely detailed. The palate is equipped with fine, supple tannins that render this a pliant Gevrey-Chambertin, although there is some new oak on the finish that needs to be subsumed. At 60%, I can see how a little more prudence might have been preferable. Not bad, but I would like to see how this develops and eats up that new wood. 89-91 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Smoky dark fruits and a meaty, savoury character on the nose. Dominique says a good deal of the smokiness is from the barrels (Seguin Moreau, 15% new) so this will no doubt decrease in intensity. Powerful tannins (as in 2017) but with a richer vein of dark fruit behind them. RKL "The 2018 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a ripe black cherry and cassis bouquet that is intense but manages to retain just enough freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with red cherry and strawberry mixed with a touch of gingerbread and pain d'épices, leading to a fleshy, easygoing finish. Fine. 86-88 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

From a tiny plot next to the Musigny Grand Cru. The location shows in the grand cru levels of intensity of aroma and length on the palate, with tremendous mineral character. Will need 5-7 years to begin to show itself. RKL "There are two used barrels of the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Borniques 1er Cru this year. It has a deep inky color. The bouquet is rather marked by the wood, although it is much more assimilated on the palate, which shows impressive energy and balance. The components still need to come together, but they will do so with a few years in bottle. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Riper and more fruit forward than Les Charmes, with meaty-savoury aromas and powerful black fruits. Easy, accessible and very juicy on the palate at the moment. The fruit is the star of this wine...a "crowd-pleaser" and a definite 'buy'. RKL "The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru, which underwent malolactic earlier than the Charmes, has a more backward bouquet and more red fruit, plus a touch of brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with dark-chocolate-tinged red fruit, and here the oak is a little dominant toward the sucrous finish. The Charmes might be the better long-term bet. 91-93 points" points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Beautiful, floral nose, perfumed and elegant already. Excellent length on the palate, with succulent fruit and (gently) mouthwatering acidity...beautifully balanced. From old vines, all above 50 years and many 60-90 years old. RKL "Deep bright purple-crimson. Riper and sweeter than the Bourgogne, seductive Chambolle perfume. Lightly chewy yet smooth tannins. Generous and still fresh. Long, too. GV. Drink 2023 – 2030. 16.5+ points" jancisrobinson.com (JH) "The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in 25% new oak, feels quite rich and opulent on the nose, maybe at the expense of some terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and quite elegant on the finish. Hopefully the aromatics will muster a bit more composure by bottling. 88-90 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com points" Close

A beautiful walled vineyard site (in the centre of the photo below, just in front of the woods). All 5 ha are owned by Jeannin-Naltet, making this a 'monopole'. Planted at a very high density, 10,000 vines per hectare. 25-30% new oak. Earthy humus aromas, with beautiful dark black fruits. The balance earthy minerality and black fruit reminds me of Clos de Vougeot! Very well-balanced, with a great length. 2021 - 2027+. RKL Close

Strong family resemblance to the Grands Voyens, but with the intensity turned up by way of that limestone minerality and slightly more purity of crunchy red and black fruit. This will need longer (4-5 years) to be ready for drinking, but the reward should be an impressively fine red at this price. The length is already impressive. 2022 - 2030+. RKL Close

Very fresh with lovely, lively acidity and an exceptional core of pure fruit. Aromas somewhat muted at this tasting as kieselguhr filtered in the winery yesterday. RKL "Bottled. Light cherry red with a healthy glow. Rich, sweet, marrons glacés nose. Here the opulence of the fruit almost masks the tannic structure (cf the village Pommard) but it should reward ageing. Proper representative of its climat. Drink 2027 – 2040. 17+ points" jancisrobinson.com "The 2018 Pommard les Epenots 1er Cru comes from 0.17 hectare of vines planted in 1961. Raspberry, wild strawberry and briar storm from the glass with great intensity, signifying a Pommard determined to make an impression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and fine acidity, more refined and understated than the nose but showing impressive harmony and tension on the finish. This is a beautifully crafted Pommard. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

Low in aroma today (the wines were filtered with kieselguhr yesterday) but the texture is silky and the the fruit is very pure and intense on the palate...one of the most concentrated Volnay Villages I have tasted at Voillot. RKL "The 2018 Volnay Village comes from 1.94 hectares of vine spread over four large parcels plus some small plots. This has an attractive bouquet of mulberry and raspberry aromas, quite refined in style and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm, almost Pommard-like tannins. This is a masculine Volnay, broody at the moment, but it will open up nicely with time in bottle, so don't be afraid to stick it in the cellar for four or five years. 87-89 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com Close

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is a beautiful wine in the making, revealing an incipiently complex bouquet that mingles aromas of smoky berry fruit, cassis and orange rind with nuances of peony, espresso roast, rich soil tones and black truffle. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with excellent concentration, fine structuring tannins that are largely concealed by the wine's wealth of fruit and a long, perfumed finish. 93-95+ points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com "The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet that just pips the Cazetiers for precision and poise.
