Mas de Boislauzon

2016 was an exceptional vintage across the Southern Rhône and in particular Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  With masses of soft ripe tannins and fresh acidity, the wines are inviting now and also have a long future ahead of them.

Mas de Boislauzon is a small ‘artisan’ estate, family run for five generations, currently by Christine Chaussy and her bother Daniel.  Certified organic and employing a biodynamic approach, the domaine takes its name from the Boislauzon 'lieu dit' which is at its heart.  Their 10 hectares of vines here are spread across sand, rock and clay soils - some of the best terroirs in the region.

The wines wear their full-bodied structure lightly, with wonderful texture (‘mouthfeel’) which has nothing to do with over-extraction.  Fermentation is in concrete - with its irregular surface and breathability giving richness and energy.

Winemakers around the world are rediscovering this material, with alien-like concrete 'eggs' appearing in the best wineries everywhere, from Bordeaux to Napa, but in the Southern Rhône, this knowledge was never lost.

With intense curry plant spice and fresh red fruits abounding, the Côtes du Rhône Villages at £95 per case is outstanding value for money.  The Châteauneuf-du-Pape has even more by way of elegant floral, herbal notes and a licorice palate, but it is the rich texture which defines this wine.

The Cuvée ‘Quet’ (from the old French name for Boislauzon) elevates this richness to extraordinary levels.  Part of the blend is from 70 year old Mourvedre vines on the estate's finest terroir. It competes with some of the most sought after wines of the region and in top years command high prices; the 2010currently trades at £2400 a dozen...

We'd be hard pressed to think of more honest winemaking, able to hit the mark at such varied price levels, from everyday affordability to wines to cellar for decades.

2016 Mas de Boislauzon Côtes du Rhône Villages

Opulent on the nose but with fresh red and black fruits, the alcohol is completely in check and plays second fiddle to intense spiceness - curry plant and pepper - which carries all the way through to the finish.  RKL

"Readers looking for a good introduction into the style of the 2016 vintage should check out the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Villages from this great estate.  Based on 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and other varieties, it gives a great perfume of blackberries, toasted spices, smoked earth and licorice.  It's ripe, mouthfilling and pleasure bent. 90 points" Jeb Dunnuck.

2016 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Fresh red fruits and intense spice made elegant on the nose by elegant floral aromas, suggesting far more to this than just fruit.  Licorice mid-palate with black cherry fruits, supple tannins and an incredible rich texture which persists all the way through to the finish.  Pair with rich casseroles or char-grilled meats. "Flowers, spice and incredibly sweet fresh ripe red berries are all over the place here.  There is texture, freshness, length and character that leaves with a spicy kirsch and pepper note in the juicy finish...This remains one of the best bargains in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for character and quality tooday. 93 points" Wine Cellar Insider

"The base cuvée from this estate always delivers, and the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is no exception. Based on a 70/30 split of Grenache and Mourvedre, it boasts a deep purple colour as well as a rocking nose of blackberries, toasted spices and peppered meats. This puppy is jam-packed with fruit, is full-bodied, has ripe tannin, and is just a smoking good Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 94 points" JebDunnock.com

2016 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Quet

"Similarly colored to the classic cuvée, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Quet is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre. It offers a huge, rich, powerful style that never goes over the top and stays balanced and graceful. Currants, toasted spices, caramelized beef, and exotic notes all flow to a massively textured, powerhouse of a wine that has a stacked mid-palate, a bombastic personality, and a great finish. It needs two to three years of bottle age but is an incredible, heady, powerful wine. 98 points" JebDunnock.com

2015 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Quet

"Like the base cuvée, yet even richer, more powerful, and decadent, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Quet is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that was raised in very old barrels and oak tanks. Full-bodied, ripe, sexy and about as hedonistic as it gets in 2015, this beauty has tons of sweet tannin, a huge mid-palate, and big finish. It's an incredible wine that’s guaranteed to raise your heart rate (it did for me anyway). 99 points" JebDunnock.com
