2019 Chateau Angludet: £276 IB per dozenMonday, May 18
Our 2019 Bordeaux En Primeur campaign could not begin with a better, more reliable example of classic claret than 2019 Château Angludet. Released this morning at £276 IB per dozen bottles, this is a brilliant opener to this very unusual season of offers.
We tasted cask samples of the 2019 last week and were thrilled by the freshness and energy of the vintage, despite the obvious fruit concentration. Angludet have had an interesting few years ("interesting" as in the Chinese proverb) with a 2016 which some found hard to understand (we loved it) followed by a complete loss of the crop in 2017 due to frost and a tiny yield in 2018 due to mildew.
All the while, we sense winemaker Ben Sichel has been taking Angludet in a very purist direction, which belies the staid image of such a classic property. The 2019 shows moderate oak influence in the cask sample, with 50% aged in amphorae, showing in the fresh, pure and precise fruit aromas and heightened sense of mineral character. The 32 hectares of vines are in the process of biodynamic conversion and this seems to be showing benefits in the fruit quality. The blend is 43% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and a relatively high 12% of Petit Verdot giving depth and structure.
This is the perfect opener to the campaign, with the release price 11% lower than for the 2018. We expect to sell out of stocks of this wine, so do please contact us if you would like to order.
Offered en primeur, landing Spring 2022.
2019 Château Angludet, Margaux
Excellent intensity of colour in the glass and with vibrant, fresh aromas of blackcurrant and savoury black tea. Some saline mineral notes balancing the precise fruit on the palate, with very fine Margaux tannins already in evidence, promising an elegant and complex wine in the medium-term (drinking from around 2025).
