2019 Château Léoville Poyferré: £615 IB per dozen bottlesMonday, June 8
Another great release this morning, we are able to offer the 2019 Château Léoville Poyferré at just £615, a full £200 down (-25%) on the 2018 release price.
Since Sara Lecompte Cuvelier took over day to day management from her uncle Didier Cuvelier, the wines have emphasised elegance and a plush texture on the palate, a less austere and structured style to their neighbours at Leoville-Barton. James Suckling award it 96-97 points, finding 'chewy and rich' tannins and 'excellent length'. The 2019 is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 3% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is destined to be aged for 18-20 months in 80% new French oak.
Whilst we did not visit this April, this is an estate which has been at the top of its game for years. Vintage after vintage has represented the year exceptionally well. This is a 'super-second' you can buy blind with the utmost confidence...especially in such a good year and at such a phenomenal price.
Among the releases from earlier this morning, Cheval Blanc is attracting lots of attention, unsurprisingly given the 30% reduction on the 2018 price. We expect to sell out shortly, so do please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to place an order.
Offered En Primeur, landing Spring 2022.
2019 Château Léoville Poyferré, Cru Classé St.-Julien
"A rich and highly charged Poyferré, with creamy damson and vanilla pod spice expanding through the mid palate. Hugely impressive, with velvety tannins and plenty of charcoal, grilled sarments and slate impact. Higher tension through the core would take the score up even further. 4% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the estate under the ownership of the Cuvelier family. Drinking Window 2027 - 2042. 96 points." Jane Anson, Decanter
"Chewy and rich this year with lots of ripe tannins and solid depth of fruit. Chocolate and walnuts to the blue fruit. It’s full-bodied. Plenty of fruit at the end. Excellent length. 96-97 points." Jamessuckling.com
"The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré has a typically seductive bouquet with layers of ripe black fruit laced with tobacco, sous-bois, touches of marmalade and dried orange peel. Give it another hour and more blue fruit begins to emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with lavish, luxuriant black fruit and a creamy texture that is instantly seductive. It is a more opulent Saint-Julien than the Barton with a satin-like texture on the finish. If you love the style of Léoville-Poyferré then you will adore this. 96-98 points." Neal Martin, Vinous.com
