2022 Château Capbern En Primeur

Château Capbern has been one of our most popular en primeur offers over several vintages and the latest 2022 release is superb, scoring 94-96 points from Jeb Dunnuck.

This is another winning formula this year:  An affordable estate that shares a winemaking team with its stable-mate, St-Estèphe super-star Calon-Ségur, in a great vintage for this commune.

Capbern is superb value at just £230 per dozen, or just over £19 per bottle in bond.

Château Capbern, Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois

Producer Profile

Château Capbern, Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois

Château Capbern (known as Capbern-Gasqueton until 2014) is a Cru Bourgeois in Saint-Estèphe.  A long-standing favourite (we have been drinking and enjoying the 2011 of late), Capbern is also an estate well on its way to ascending into a different league of winemaking, first under Laurent Dufau and, since 2020, under Vincent Millet.

Dufau and Millet are credited with the rapid progress made at Calon-Ségur, under the same ownership as Capbern since 2012.  Calon is challenging Montrose and Cos d'Estournel as the leading wines of Saint-Estèphe and each new vintage of Capbern shows some of this ambition too.  The 33 hectares of vines are hand-harvested and the wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.

Tasting Notes"The 2022 Capbern is a wild, exotic wine. Super-ripe, red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and sweet spice are front and center. The tannins are a bit untamed at this stage; hopefully élevage will take care of that. Tasted two times. 89-91 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com------"Attractive inky ruby colour, sculpted slightly heady iris flowers on the aromatics, opens to damson fruits, cocoa bean, liquorice root, slate, clear concentration and a flash of heat. Harvest began on September 6, earliest ever seen here, through to September 27. 26hl/h yields. 60% new oak. 91 points" janeanson.com------"Notes of dark berries and cherries mingled with licorice and loamy soil introduce the 2022 Capbern, a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy wine framed by ripe, powdery tannins and concluding with a long, somewhat heady finish. It's a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, picked between the 6th and 27th of September. 90-92 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"The 2022 Capbern was cropped at 26hL/ha between 6 and 27 September, a 20-day cuvaison and matured in 60% new oak for a planned 18 months. The Cabernet Sauvignon berries were tiny this year, which underlies why the Merlot comprises a higher percentage of the blend. It has an airy, floral bouquet with blackberries, wild strawberries and a touch of raspberry confit. There's an almost Pinot-like purity. The palate is medium-bodied with a grippy, peppery entry, full-bodied and muscular at the moment. I'm seeking a bit more grace here - perhaps this Saint-Estèphe is slightly over-revving on the finish? 2027-2047. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"A firm and tight red with blackberry and currant character. Medium body. Bright and savory. 92-93 points" jamessuckling.com------"One of the more opulent, sexy wines in the vintage, the 2022 Château Capbern just about jumps out of the glass with its sweet red, blue, and black fruits as well as notions of chocolate, graphite, and leafy herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated, and textured on the palate, with ripe tannins, this stunning Saint-Estèphe is up there with the finest vintages I've tasted from this château. 94-96 points" Jebdunnuck.com
