Tasting Notes"...This opens steely and gripping, with fine acidity, firmness on the finish and enough concentration in this lighter-styled vintage. The best of the trio submitted by Taylor Fladgate this issue, it does everything well and mostly exceeds expectations. It more or less combines a bit of the initial power displayed by the Fonseca and the expressiveness of the Croft, and adds silky texture, gloriously fresh fruit and fine flavor. It will need a little patience, but it will also be rather hard to keep your hands off of it. The good news is that it did seem to come around surprisingly fast, becoming a bit less impressive than on first impression. By Day 3, it was quite accessible and it drank fairly well. I still liked it a lot. Drink 2023-55. 94 points" The Wine Advocate (MS)

Tasting NotesComplex aromas of beeswax and herbs, masses of fruit concentration but it is locked away at present by the exceptionally fine tannins. An impression of dryness on the finish and elegance, beautifully balanced. RKL "The Dow's 2017 reflects the pedigree that has given Dow's its legendary status in the fine wine world. Depth, intensity and power are the key hallmarks of this wine with a formidable structure that will ensure its ability to age for many decades. 2017 was a very different year to 2016 in terms of the viticultural conditions and it was interesting to watch the progression of the wine and scrutinize its quality as it developed over its first two winters. Whereas 2016 had a Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira very mild winter and exceptionally hot summer, this was compensated by abundant winter and spring rainfall. Conversely, 2017 was warm and dry throughout, although summer temperatures were closer to average, which proved to be a very significant factor allowing for complete, balanced ripening. In 2017, the mature plantings of Touriga Nacional from the eastfacing Vinha Grande parcels at Senhora da Ribeira made an important contribution. These older vines' well developed root systems and the cooler aspect of the vineyards proved their worth in the particularly hot and dry conditions. Dow's grapes are fermented in the small, specialist wineries of Bomfim and Senhora da Ribeira. Our winemaking teams select various single variety plantings to vinify separately as well as some specific cofermentations, which in 2017 included combined fermentations of Sousão and Touriga Franca. They are trodden in our modern lagares and achieve ideal extractions, producing wines of great complexity." Shipper's note.

Tasting NotesExplosive with black fruits, but absolutely the freshest. Blackcurrant, black cherry, herbs and the same slatey mineral character you find in top wines from Priorato. No sense of heat. Very distinct, a brilliant effort. RKL. "A narrow magenta ring around a core of inky purple black. The nose opens with a burst of dark, woodland fruit, dense and succulent, blended with fresher, more vibrant red berry aromas. A slatey minerality holds this exuberant fruitiness in check. At this stage, the nose is still reserved and discreetly aromatic, revealing leafy, balsamic scents and cedary notes of sawn wood. The first impression on the palate, as on the nose, is of tightly packed, dense dark berry fruit, which then explodes on the mid-palate and surges into the long finish. The texture is round and velvety but the taut, sinewy tannins and a strand of crisp acidity provide firmness and structure. The layered, complex fruit typical of Fonseca holds sway over this weighty, powerful wine." Shipper's note.

Tasting NotesBeautiful scents of bergamot and rock rose, cassis and blueberries. Utterly distinct in style from the other houses but one of the most 'complete' wines here, offering abundant fruit, accessibility and a fine and powerful tannic structure. If forced to choose a single port this would be the one. RKL "This wine is produced from vines at the flagship Graham's property in the Douro valley, Quinta dos Malvedos, with small parcels of top graded grapes from Quinta do Tua, Quinta da Vila Velha, and Quinta do Vale das Malhadas. In 2017 42% less rain fell at Malvedos than the 30 year average and the vines produced a small but extremely high-quality crop with extraordinary concentration. The wine was fermented in small batches at our specialist on-site winery at Malvedos. It carries the classic Graham's hallmarks – full-bodied, rich, and opulent – and will provide great drinking pleasure for decades to come. Only 5,250 nine litre cases were bottled." Shipper's note.

Tasting NotesVery vinous with fine, complex fruit aromas and something wild about it - damsons and mulberry scented, hedgerow fruits as well as plenty of concentrated cassis and elemental minerality. RKL "2017 was characterised by a cold, dry winter followed by an exceptionally hot and dry spring and summer. Apart from heavy rainfall (25 mm) on 6 July at Quinta do Noval, only 300 mm of rain fell since November 2016. June was the hottest month since 1980, with temperatures reaching 42-44°C in the Douro Valley during a heat wave lasting from 7 to 24 June. Due to these extreme weather conditions, all phases of the vine's growth were 15 to 20 days early compared to 2016. The vines weathered the shortage of water and the high temperatures well. At the end of August the harvest looked very promising, with excellent sanitary conditions. Harvest started much earlier than usual due to the weather: from 17 August for the white wines and 21 August for the reds and the Ports, lasting until 28 September, with high temperatures and a total absence of rain." Tasting NotesThe immediate impression here is of freshness and elegance. Relatively closed on the nose at this stage but what is there is fine and mineral and floral. Violets and black fruits with some citrus fruits too (makes me think of the 'breakfast tree' at Vargellas). Remarkable that such an intense year has only served to up the classicism of Taylor's, a classic vintage. RKL "Opaque black at the centre with a narrow purple rim. Uncompromisingly Taylor's in style, elegant and precise. The nose is threaded with very fine, linear fruit, heady and complex but restrained by a graphite minerality. Quinta da Vargellas has imprinted its signature fragrance of violets, which hangs like a scented veil over the wine, and there are discreet terroir notes of citrus, wild herbs and gumcistus. The nose is still reserved but there is impressive depth and background, as well as hints of complexities still to emerge with time. The palate is held in place by lithe, muscular tannins, firm and grippy on the finish, and ends with a powerful surge of crisp, pure berry fruit. A beautifully delineated wine, with the hallmark Taylor's poise and definition and the tantalising promise of pleasures still to come." Shipper's note.

Tasting NotesClearly the junior wine in this trio of 2018 releases from Fladgate, but still a very compact and complete vintage port, with lots of intensity and still possessing a vinous character. The fortifying spirit in all three wines is beautifully integrated and frames the fruit rather than tussling with it. Needs time in bottle to fully integrate. RKL "The 2018 Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port has an intense nose of black fruit mixed with raisin, fig, cloves and a touch of boot polish. This is well defined, but it requires a few years in bottle, as if I really need to say that. The palate is well balanced with quite a strict, terse opening, very spicy with black pepper, cloves (again) and bay leaf. Broody at first but opening with time to reveal a very attractive and complex, structured finish with hints of tobacco and smoke. This is a lovely nascent Quinta da Roeda but, as if it needs to be said, it will need time. 93 points." Neal Martin, Vinous

Tasting NotesFresh, bright black fruit aromas, with complex pepper and smoky minerality. The initial impact on the palate is superb, with mocca and liquorice flavours but then the wine reins it in and finishes quite elegant. RKL "The 2018 Guimaraens Vintage Port, the first release since 2015, has a rich and opulent bouquet with black cherries, stewed figs and dates. It has a little more warmth than the Quinta da Roeda 2018 tasted alongside, certainly one of the more decadent aromatics. The palate is sweet and fleshy on the entry with black fruit, tar, desiccated orange peel, Xmas cake and juniper berries. I admire the harmony of this Vintage Port. The firm structure only becomes apparent towards the finish. Wonderful length on the aftertaste, the mouth stained with Port for 60 seconds after. Excellent. 95pts." Neal Martin, Vinous "Blackish crimson. High toned and alluring on the nose. Quite a bit of structure and something suggestive of fireworks. This is the business for a vintage port! The sort of wine that would probably have qualified as a full-blooded Fonseca vintage port a few decades ago. Peppery and fiery and yet the tannins are subsumed under the fruit. We’re having steak tonight and I am tempted to drink this with it. 17.5pts." Jancis Robinson

Tasting NotesMineral, spice and tarry aromas on the nose complementing black fruits, intense but still somewhat closed at this tasting. Voluminous texture on the palate immediately sets it apart (above) the single quinta vintage wines. Despite the texture and breadth, the finish is extremely long and linear and precise, with tannins as polished as any cru classe claret. How do they do it! RKL "Aromatic and expressive, this adds a big bang for a finish that reminds you that it is, indeed, Taylor's. After opening it on the first day tasted, it tightened fast and showed the structure I like to see in serious Ports. It has that classic flavour profile as well and shows fine concentration. Even 48 hours later it had no problem showing off a little muscle, even though it drank decently at that point. The fruit is expressive, as noted, but it is still a bit closed just now. 95pts." The Wine Advocate "The 2018 Taylor’s Vintage Port comes predominantly from two vineyards: Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. It has a classy, aristocratic bouquet, a signature note apropos Taylor’s Vintage: dense black fruit with touches of melted tar, cloves and white pepper. This just builds and builds in the glass. The palate is very harmonious with fine tannins, perfect acidity and very pure with a gentle, almost caressing second half. White pepper interlaces the black fruit with a very precise finish. Pure class. 97 points." Neal Martin, Vinous
