Tasting Notes"Readers will find much to admire in Luciano Sandrone's 1996 Barolo Cannubi Boschis. More than anything else, the 1996 surprises by how sensual and open-knit it is, particularly within the context of the year. Silky, nuanced and super-expressive, the 1996 is a real joy to taste and drink today. Hints of smoke, licorice and tobacco lead into a core of dark red and purplish stone fruits. In 1996, Cannubi Boschis is a Barolo of pure grace and class. 95 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, Oct '17

Tasting Notes"Sandrone's 1999 Barolo Cannubi Boschis has become much more delicate over the last few years. Still fresh and vibrant, the 1999 impresses for its total sense of harmony. The tannins are now starting to melt away, allowing the fruit to be fully expressive. Violets, lavender and blue/purplish fruit grace the finish. There is a lot to like here. 93 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, Aug '14

Tasting Notes"The 2013 Messorio is the highlight in this range of new releases from La Macchiole. Ample and flamboyant on the palate, the 2013 exudes depth. The 2013 is naturally quite primary at this stage, but it will be magnificent with a few years in bottle. Messorio has a way of becoming exotic and visceral over time. Today, the 2013 is at the very early stages of that journey. 97 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com. Nov '16

Tasting Notes"A wine of extraordinary finesse, the 2013 Percarlo is utterly magnificent. Creamy and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2013 speaks to finesse more than the power and explosiveness that is often found here. With time in the glass, the mid-palate fleshes out and the flavors gain in intensity and darkness. When young, Percarlo is often forbiddingly tannic, but the gradual move towards larger format barrels and casks has, among other things, given the wine much more textural elegance. I can't wait to see how it ages. This is one of the most complete and strikingly beautiful wines of the vintage. 98 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com. Oct '16

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

£1,400 per case of 3
IB
Tasting Notes"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva pulls you close to the glass with a deep and seductive display of black raspberry preserves complemented by sweet sage, dried roses and pipe tobacco. With further coaxing, it gains in volume and lift, taking on hints of mint and camphor. This greets the palate with undeniable elegance, casting velvety waves of violet-tinged wild berries and sweet spices across a motivating core of juicy acidity, as a subtle coating of round tannins forms toward the close. While structured and incredibly long, energy remains high, as nuances of cherry pits offset by sour citrus and hints of cedar fade. It?s amazing to experience such energy and purity from a young Biondi Santi Riserva. 97 points." Eric Guido, Vinous.com

Brunello di Montalcino
2016 / 4 cases / 75cl
£825 per case of 6
IB
Tasting Notes"From a benchmark vintage, the Biondi-Santi 2016 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a gorgeous appearance with medium concentration highlighted by shiny hues of garnet and dark ruby. The first thing you notice is the compact dark fruit and rather robust textural fibre and power presented here. You almost bite into this wine, and you taste some fine grain linked to the young tannins. That, with the fresh acidity that is the hallmark signature of this estate, guarantees long cellar ageing, and I would put my money on this vintage for long-long-term longevity. The fruit is compact and supple with dried cherry, blue flower, iron ore and candied orange peel. There is tobacco, balsam herb and gardening soil in a supporting role, and the wine is beautifully fleshed out but also rich in this balanced growing season. It surely needs more time to come together with pinpoint precision, but the wine's elegance is a certainty. 97+ points." Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Tasting Notes"Healthy mid ruby. Perfumed, energetic nose of cherry and raspberry with minerally notes and hints of black pepper and perfectly aligned with oak. Transparent and perfumed palate, but not entirely open yet, with finely chiselled long tannins. Gorgeous balance and freshness. 17.5 points." Walter Speller, Jancisrobinson.com, Mar 2021------"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is a dark and youthfully understated beauty. A gorgeous display of tobacco and savory herbs gives way to tart cherries, currants, brown spice and earth tones, gaining further richness the longer it spends in the glass. It’s seamless, elegant and silky in feel, with layers of ripe red fruit offset by dried citrus, as notes of black tea, licorice, hints of olive and saturating minerals settle in. There’s so much going on here; yet beneath its polished elegance, a layer of fine tannins penetrates deeply, making for a dry and structured finale. 94 points." Eric Guido, Vinous.com, Nov 2020------"The Pieve Santa Restituta 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina (with 15,000 bottles produced) offers intensity and beautifully concentrated fruit. The bouquet reveals layers of wild cherry, rose, blue flower and candied orange peel. However, if you are expecting a more subdued Rennina, that's not what you get in this classic 2016 vintage. The wine is buzzing with energy and vitality, with a lifted and an especially brilliant set of aromas. You might also detect a hint of fresh peppercorn or coriander seed that gives the wine a veil of the exotic. 95+points." Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Nov 2020------"Some much shaved black truffles to the blackberry, walnut and chocolate undertones. It’s full-bodied and layered with chewy yet soft tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Smoke, mahogany and wet-earth undertones. Needs three or four years to soften and come together. Best after 2024. 97 points." James Suckling, Nov 2020

Tasting Notes"The 2016 Barbaresco Gallina is a gorgeous wine full of the classic, youthful austerity that is such a signature of the house style. Deceptive in its light to medium-bodied feel, the Gallina offers up striking Nebbiolo aromatics redolent of crushed red berry fruit, spice, mint and rose petal. Nervy tannins lend energy and drive. The translucent beauty of Nebbiolo is so alluring. What a great start to this tasting. 94 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2016 Barolo Pira is a gorgeous, complex wine endowed with terrific depth and tons of nuance that continues to open over time. Light on its feet and yet wonderfully deep, the 2016 has so much going on. Kirsch, sweet red cherry, spice, orange zest, menthol and spice fill out the layers effortlessly. Young Barolo tannins are present, but there is plenty of richness in the fruit to keep things in balance. The Pira is absolutely stellar in this tasting. 95 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

Brunello di Montalcino

Tasting Notes"...a wine of considerable bandwidth with lots of dark fruit, rich plum and spice. It carries medium fruit weight and concentration that proves more than enough to surround and soften the spicy oak notes and toast that also play an important role in this hot-vintage Brunello. The results are plump and slightly round, but you also get the acidity and the tannic structure of an age-worthy Sangiovese. Organically farmed fruit is selected from across the best parcels of the estate, and some of the vines are up to 55 years old...I would recommend setting this bottle aside for near- to medium-term drinking. 93 points." Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jan 2022------"Very attractive floral and fresh aromas to the plums and cherries, following through to the palate. Flavorful and gorgeous, yet lively and focused. Lovely 2017. Drink now or hold. 94 points." James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com

Tasting Notes"Lively, sinewy nose of balsamic. Very appetising and sleek-fruited. Already enjoyable. Quite a feat! Marked acidity but fun. Easier to see the Sangiovese than the Merlot, so this is a genuine representative of Tuscany and the hills it was grown in, but it still has a long way to go. Drink 2023 - 2040. 17++ points." Jancis Robinson MW------"...Power and seduction straight away on the nose, this smells intensely of black cherries and blueberries. The palate is juicy and instantly mouthwatering giving an abundance of succulent red berries and a touch of herbal spice on the finish. This is excellent quality, I adore it. Smooth and silky with purity and energy. Really shines in the glass - drinking well now but will also age. The second vintage on the Place for Siepi since its debut last year. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030. 96 points." Georgina Hindle, Decanter Magazine------"The second year on the Place for the Mazzei family with Siepi. What a brilliant vintage of this wine, raspberry, redcurrant, sage, tobacco leaf and savoury cherry pit. Moreish and delicate but powerful and intense, and just so drinkable in that way the best Italian wines always are - you can imagine this being passed around a table and everyone wants a piece. Love it. The same family as Conterno, in the wine business since 1435. ”Hold +3 years or carafe 4 hours. 97 points." Jane Anson------"This is a really racy and fine Siepi with currant, black-cherry and dark-chocolate character. It's medium- to full-bodied with very long, intense tannins that are linear and fine-textured. Really builds on the palate. Super structure. Finesse with Power. 98 points." James Suckling------"The 2019 Siepi continues a trend towards greater finesse and nuance in this wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice, licorice and plum meld together effortlessly in the glass. Dense and layered, with striking detail, the 2019 is so impressive. The flavors are bright, bold and punchy. An exceptionally beautiful and riveting wine, the 2019 is rich and concentrated, but not at all heavy. What a total knock-out. Drinking window 2025-2044. 99 points" vinous.com (AG)

Tasting Notes"So spicy, yet also rich, the 2020 Soave Classico Calvarino impresses with an alluring mix of ground ginger, lime zest, minty-basil and wet stone. It envelopes the palate in silky textures while also bombarding it with salty mineral tones and a sour twang of green apple. While supremely elegant, the 2020 is also full of nervous energy, as it finishes long with tropical floral nuances and a bitter tug of lemon rinds. Readers can certainly enjoy the Calvarino today, yet it needs some time to come fully into focus. 93 points." Vinous.com (EG), Apr 2022

Tasting Notes"The 2021 Soave Classico lifts from the glass with an intense burst of sour citrus, crushed rocks, sea spray and sour melon. Its medium-weight textures wash across the palate with prominence, nicely contrasted by a reverberation of sweet and sour green citrus and zesty acidity. Granny Smith apples and exotic inner florals cascade throughout the finale, as the 2021 tapers off with unexpected length. Wait, this is an “entry-level” Soave Classico? Bravo. 91 points."
