Alsace

Alsace produces some of the world's greatest white wines, but they are enormously under-appreciated by UK wine lovers.  We suggest they should be enjoyed on a weekly, if not daily basis!

Tasting NotesZind Humbrecht are well-known for allowing their residual sugar levels to vary vintage. This has a mighty 45 grams per litre, but it's hidden under layers of intense fruit flavours, minerality and fine acidity. There are also white grape tannins from the skins, giving a red wine-like texture. RKL

Tasting NotesEntrancing delicate peach skin aromas on the nose, like a very fine and intense peach fragrance, light and elegant. Balanced on the palate (just 12.5% abv) with some mineral intensity, quite stunning. RKL Tasted as a sample straight fro the oak vat, the 2017 Alsace Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl is pure, fresh and chalky on the very deep, intense, flinty/smoky nose. Not sulfured yet and not fermented to full dry, this is a textured, lush and finely structured Pinot with delicate tannins and charming fruit. At this stage, this can only be a very provisional comment and score. Tasted October 2018. 90-93 points." Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 239 (SR)

Tasting Notes"Hints of gunpowder and flint mix with a subtle but sonorous tone of Damask rose on the nose of this wine. The palate brings a much brighter, lemony note of sunny peach ripeness, suggesting the juiciness of peach compote. The purity of flavor is highlighted by lemony accents that frame this generous, nectar-like wine. Drink 2025–2050. 95 points." Wine Enthusiast Magazine Oct 2020

Tasting NotesCompeting for me with the Rangen Riesling as favourite in this line-up, structured and powerful with a savoury, cheesy (epoisses!) character on the palate which will develop for decades. As Olivier says in his own tasting note, it is impossible not to smile when tasting this! RKL

Tasting Notes"The 2018 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl offers lovely concentration and depth. Apricot, passion fruit, tangerine oil and dried flowers all develop nicely in the glass. I would give the 2018 a year or two in bottle to soften, as it is a bit severe today. 94 points." Antonio Galloni, Vinoius.com, Oct 2020 "The creamy juiciness of freshly cut, ripe Williams pear dances appetizingly on the nose of this wine. Fruit purity is also apparent on the palate, imbued by vivid, rounded juiciness and supported by a lovely backdrop of pithy, slightly phenolic texture. This adds grace and backbone and lets the juicy pear notes express themselves fully. The finish is wonderfully dry and lasting. 94 points." Wine Enthusiast Magazine Oct 2020

Tasting Notes"The 2018 Riesling Clos Saint Urbain, Rangen de Thann is a gorgeous, exotic wine endowed with superb depth. Apricot, orange confit, white flowers and a whole range of tropical inflections are nicely balanced by the wine’s freshness and energy. The 2018 has quite a bit of density, but it closes down pretty quickly in the glass, which is a bit frustrating in a tasting setting, but something that won’t be an issue in time. It is a very special wine, that much is clear. 95 points." Antonio Galloni, Vinoius.com, Oct 2020 "Smoky stoniness initially fills the nose on this wine. With a little more air, pear fruitiness comes though while a flinty glint of reduction smoulders in the background. The palate comes with the gentlest sweetness and still needs to knit together. Ample fruit, great energy and immense concentration are all evident in one juicy sip. This is a powerhouse of a wine, coiled tightly and streamlined into a toned swoop. It will release its force in due course. Drink 2025–2045. 95 points." Wine Enthusiast Magazine Oct 2020

Tasting Notes"The 2018 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is bright and taut in the glass, with striking dimension and tons of complexity. Lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers and lightly honeyed notes offer a striking interplay of richness and freshness. More than anything else, the Rotenberg is marked by a feeling of structure and drive, with underlying veins of saline intensity that bring tension to the finish. 94 points." Antonio Galloni, Vinoius.com, Oct 2020 "Restrained zestiness and a sense of russet-pear peel is all the shy nose gives away for now. The palate of this wine comes in with freshness supported by the liveliness of some residual carbon dioxide, and a richer, almost buttery notion of pear fruit. Vivacity has the upper hand, especially on the sprightly finish that tapers from the rounded fruit. 94 points." Wine Enthusiast Magazine Oct 2020

Tasting NotesMore slate minerality and crushed rock than Heimburg on the nose, some slight petrol aromas too, very structured on the palate, almost like a wine which has seen new oak, but in fact the structure is all from lees ageing and white grape tannins, very impressive. RKL

Tasting Notes"Gewurz can be an impressive but tiring wine. With its floral delicacy and lively, graceful personality, this is the opposite of the bombastic norm. The touch of sweetness stays in the background and the floral freshness wins out at the long, precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 95 points." Riesling Brand

Tasting Notes"The Grand Cru Brand is located just above the village of Turckheim on a succession of small biotite granite hills. It is visible from the large Munster valley which means that despite its south, south-east facing, the Brand also enjoys the wind running down the valley. The vines grow here in a very precocious climate, accentuated by the granite that warms up quickly and transfer sun heat deep in the soil. It is however a geology that enable the roots to grow deep in the soil, at levels where they can feed from the clay and minerals resulting from the granite decomposition. These old vines were planted at a time when massal selection was the norm, so cluster are small and yields are naturally small, particularly in 2019 when most Riesling showed millerandage. Due to the ripeness of the grapes in 2019, the fermentation was particularly slow for this wine. We couldn’t believe that eventually the wine fermented bone dry after 12 months of activity. 2024-2044+" Olivier Humbrecht MW------"A giant of minerality with enormous structure, this also delights you with the stunningly ripe apricot and pineapple fruit that’s wrapped around its dense core. This will surely only get better for many years to come, as it slowly reveals its deep riches. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2023. 98 points." Tasting Notes"The Clos Häuserer is a little 1.2ha vineyard planted with Riesling in 1973. It isn’t an historic vineyard as such as it was created by my father, who managed to group together many small parcels to form a large coherent square. It is bordered on the top by the Hengst Grand Cru and the Häuserer road just below (the road to the houses in reference to an old roman settlement not far away). It was easy then to appreciate the quality potential of this vineyard and its capacity to produce long lived wines. The Clos Häuserer is lying on the same mother rock as the Hengst: a siliceous marl limestone from the oligocen period, but with a top soil layer much thicker (about 1 meter). This vineyard enjoys a warm micro-climate in summer, but the soil remains cool and the vines never suffer from drought. Like many wines produced on this geology, the Clos Häuserer is slow to ferment. The 2019 was harvested at a perfect ripeness and finished bone dry." Olivier Humbrecht MW------"With its cornucopia of yellow fruit, floral notes and wet-stone character, this is at once fleshy and enormously structured. Nothing opulent or warm about it at all, though. In fact, the very long finish is decisively cool. You really need some time to take in this embarrassment of riches! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 96 points." James Suckling, Jamessuckling.com Jul '21

Tasting Notes"Very fragrant nose of yellow and pink roses with plenty of turkish delight. Very concentrated, but the fine tannins and excellent freshness (in spite of modest acidity) give this a wonderful balance, which makes this frankly off-dry gewurz hard to resist. Tasting Notes"A very complex and structured wine for muscat, with aromas of star fruit, passion fruit,Thai basil and mandarin, plus a hint of youthful yeastiness. Tasting Notes"This smells of the ripest melon you can imagine. Fresh herbal notes, including a touch of mint. Super-elegant and bright with a very sensual, silky texture on the generous palate. Tasting Notes"A lot of riesling freaks say the grape needs stony soils, but here’s a beautiful example of how well it can do on clay-rich soil. So much citrus and peach here, even though there’s still a touch of youthful leeriness. Rich and powerful, it also has a very firm core behind the breathtaking succulence. Already great integration of concentration, fine tannins and bright acidity through the very long and complete finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 96 points" jamessuckling.com

Tasting Notes"Still very youthful, with a wealth of cool and delicate herbal and stone-fruit aromas. Very straight and vertical, with super-elegant and energetic acidity. Tons of chalky power, but the fruit is only just beginning to open up on the sleek but very compact palate. I love the really long, fragrant finish. The structure and harmony for very long aging! Tasting Notes"So smoky, with intense gunpowder character, but also notes of forest mushrooms and jack fruit. This is not only very concentrated, but also has an amazingly sensual mouth-feel that sets out in the wide field of exciting dry Alsace rieslings from the 2020 vintage. Expands and expands as it flows over your palate until it blows your mind at the unbelievably long, smoky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 99 points" jamessuckling.com

Tasting Notes"Pale yellow color. The nose is still massively dominated by the influence of limestone, so the wine is still austere and tight today. As usual, this young Zind takes time to open up but eventually reveals fresh citrus aromatics and above all a sensation of wet stones. On the palate, we find the typical delicate aspect of the Windsbuhl wines which are characterized by an airy, lacy structure. All the energy of the wine is carried by a magnificent ripe and salivating acidity. We do not find the solar character of the vintage on this wine as it expresses character and lightness at the same time. The finish is long and salivating." Producer's note, Aug '21
