Julien Bréchet “has quickly climbed to the top tier of not just the Gigondas quality ladder, but that of the whole Rhône Valley” - Josh Reynolds, Vinous
Widely regarded as one of the best winemakers in the Rhône Valley, Domaine des Bosquet's Julien Bréchet has produced another outstanding range of Gigondas wines in 2023, with an impressive set of high scores in the mid-90s, all the more impressive given their modest pricing.
Bréchet is a fast-rising star of Gigondas and indeed the entire Southern Rhône, and we urge you to try these superb wines. Below we offer seven cuvées from the domaine, all with limited availability.
Domaine Bosquets has a history stretching back to 1376, but it is only since Bréchet began working at the 26 hectare family estate in 2010 that it has risen to such prominence. 2015 was Julien's first 'solo' vintage. With little prior experience, his winemaking genius appears to have come out of nowhere. Using microvinification to map out the characteristics of his various plots, he keeps yields low...sometimes as low as 15hl/ha, with vines up to 75 years of age. Elevation is another factor, adding aromatic complexity, with the vines at around 200-350m, where the diurnal temperature variations are greater. He ages the wines for around 18 months in older, seasoned oak barrels.
If you are used to thinking of Gigondas as poor-man's Chateauneuf', these wines will be a revelation. There is nothing heavy or rustic here, just elegance, texture and mineral complexity. Accessible on landing, the wines will age well for a decade and beyond.
There are numerous superb domaines in appellations like Gigondas, Cairanne and Rasteau making wines which express their origins and the character of the winemaker. Domaine des Bosquets is surely one of the most outstanding, and we feel sure the wines will convert you to a love of the region.
2023 was marked by a warm, generally stable growing season with moderate rainfall that supported even vine growth and fruit set. Summer temperatures included several hot spells, but extremes were limited compared with vintages like 2022, allowing grapes to ripen steadily without stress. Harvest began in early September and progressed under mostly dry conditions, producing generous yields.. The resulting reds are ripe, supple, and well-balanced, with bright red and dark fruit, gentle spice, and soft, integrated structures.
Offered en primeur, landing by Summer 2026.
