G. D. Vajra is famous for their authentic but accessible wines, introducing countless newcomers to Piemonte.  We first fell in love with their Langhe Nebbiolo, which led us to offer their Barolo 'Albe' for the first time last year.  Released at just £192 per six in bond, the new 2021 vintage scores even higher than the previous release, with 95 points from the Wine Advocate. 

Since the 1970s, many Barolos have fallen into two camps...the 'traditional', aged in old oak and with lots of oxidative ageing, or 'modern', with the influence of new oak casks.  Vajra's wines have been playfully described as Post-Modern, focusing on terroir, fruit purity and minerality.    

The Barolo 'Albe' is named after the sunrise over the hills of Piemonte.  The grapes are grown in three different vineyards: Fossati (soil of Sant'Agata fossil marls) which faces south-east, Coste di Vergne (soil of limestone marls), which faces south-west, and the east-west vineyard of La Volta (soil of Sant'Agata fossil marls), at 380-480 metres above sea level. 

The 2021 vintage was warm and dry in Barolo, with favourable conditions despite some challenges. Cooler temperatures followed an early start to the growing season, and summer was warmer than average without extreme heat spikes. Rainfall was lower than usual, but winter rains and summer showers maintained balance in the vines. Frost and hail caused localised damage, but overall conditions allowed for steady ripening. 

Made from 100% Nebbiolo aged in Slovenian oak casks, the 2021 Albe is in a very fresh style, with vibrant cherry fruit, herbs, rose petal aromas, lively acidity and fine, elegant tannins giving length.  Re-tasting it this morning, the combination of tremendous fruit concentration and silky tannins reminds us of the Chambolle-Musignys of Hudelot-Baillet (high praise!) and it's hard to imagine any of our customers not loving this Barolo.
