Burgundy 2020 En Primeur: Domaine Taupenot-Merme, Gevrey-Chambertin

We are delighted to be able to offer wines from one of Gevrey-Chambertin's hottest properties again this year.  Romain Taupenot and his sister Virginie have propelled Domaine Taupenot-Merme into the first division over the last decade.  Romain is a brilliant winemaker and a great communicator.  His perspectives on the different terroirs he farms and on the vintage as a whole have become an invaluable part of each new en primeur campaign.

Although based in Morey, the 12 ha domaine has coveted vineyard holdings in over twenty appellations, including premiers and grands crus from across those three villages, and a minuscule parcel of the virtual monopole Clos des Lambrays (not offered this year due to volumes).

Romain's focus is on terroir and he likes his wines to express their origins, without too much new oak, extraction or use of whole bunch fermentation.  He began harvesting early, on the 26th August (compared with the 29th at Tortochot and early September at Rossignol-Trapet) and picked extremely clean fruit, with yields of just 25 to 30 hl/ha.  The wines are concentrated, but notably fresh, with good acidity levels.  Romain compares 2020 to 'a more energetic 2009', which is high praise!

Taupenot-Merme's wines receive some excellent reviews below and are in high demand.  Whilst we have obtained some very good allocations, volumes will be strictly limited.  Please don't delay if you wish to order.

Due to land in the UK in autumn 2022.

Producer Profile

Domaine Taupenot-Merme, Gevrey-Chambertin

Romain Taupenot's family have been making wine in Burgundy since the 17th century, but the family domaine was really created in its current form when his parents Denise Merme and Jean Taupenot married, in 1963.  Romain took over in 1998 and was joined soon after by his sister Virginie.

The domaine owns 9 hectares in the Côte de Nuits and 4.5 hectares in the Côte de Beaune, with a high proportion of grands and premiers crus. Romain favours minimal intervention and the wines are usually bottled unfiltered, with low sulphur used.

Tasting Notes"Bright purple with a ripe, cherry-laden nose. Sweet bright fruit, roses and cherries, actually very attractive and well balanced at the finish, with clean, resolved tannins and enough acidity. Tasted: December 2021 89-91 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com------"The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in around 25% new oak, has quite a perfumed bouquet with red cherries and rose petal scents, quite airy and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, slightly creamy in texture, gaining weight towards the finish that feels quite caressing. 89-91 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"This also offers a noticeable step up in elegance with its pretty mix of red currant, plum, dark cherry and pretty spice wisps. I very much like the texture of the middle weight flavors that possess both good density and minerality that become more apparent as the lingering and youthfully austere finish sits on the palate. Lovely and very Chambollesque. 89-91 points. Outstanding." Burghound

Tasting Notes"Touches of wood and menthol can be found on the ripe aromas of black cherry, raspberry and the sauvage. The supple, seductive and very suave larger-scaled flavors possess really lovely intensity that carries over to the dusty, palate coating, powerful and mildly warm finale. This too is definitely built-to-age. 91-94 points" points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"Rich, exuberant purple. A cheerful nose, flamboyantly perfumed which is as Charmes should be. I very much like the balance of this, which is all in red fruit, succulent strawberry and raspberry, good acidity, no feeling of excess heat. 14.1% but holds it without difficulty. Tasted: December 2021. 93-95 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com------"The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was very closed on the nose despite encouragement. This feels very introverted. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, more expressive here in the mouth than on the nose with black pepper, bay leaf and clove towards the finish. Give this a few years in bottle and wait for the aromatics to blossom. 93-95 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"Cask sample. Deep cherry; rich, dense nose of cherries, mulberries and blueberries; round and full. Elegant and suave. Fine tannins. 17 points" jancisrobinson.com (MH)------"Once again there is very good ripeness to the notes of poached plum, dark berry liqueur and more prominent earth and game wisps. There is very good volume to the dense, delicious and palate soaking big-bodied flavors that deliver very fine length on the robust, powerful, rustic and built-to-age finale. Patience. Outstanding. 91-93 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"Black centre, peaches and dark plums on the nose, wealthy and ripe, luxurious in style, a little too much for me but it is not unbalanced for those who like the riper style. Is showing a little on the massive side today. Under 14% though. Romain had some holes dug and found a surprising depth of clay on top of the mother rock, thus holding the water supply well. Tasted: December 2021. 91-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com------"The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was only slightly touched by the hail in early August. Lucky escape. The bouquet has a well-defined bouquet with dark berry fruit, white pepper and just a hint of menthol in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, quite minty towards the open and quite feisty finish. Good persistence here. Very fine. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com
