2021 was a frost vintage in Burgundy, with figures of 30-70% reduction in the harvest being commonplace at domaines on the Côte d'Or and in Chablis (see our harvest report, here). We expect to see drastic reductions in allocations and sharp price rises, particularly for white burgundy.
To help prepare you as well as possible, we are paying special attention to the availability of recent vintages of white burgundy (mostly 2017-2020) and will offer these here, on an ad hoc basis, as they become available. We recommend planning ahead for the next couple of years and filling your cellar now with good white burgundy, particularly with wines with ageing potential.
As land and wine prices in the region rise, small growers are expending ever more care and expense to produce the best wines from the best sites in less well-known areas: For instance, at the southern and northern extremes of the Côte d'Or, on the Hâutes-Côtes (where more elevated, cooler slopes are coming into their own in the recent hot summers), and in the Côte Chalonnaise and the Maconnais. From the best growers, these wines of 'Greater Bourgogne' can be spectacular and this is a great opportunity to make new discoveries.
---
If we had to choose our desert island wines, this would be one of them. Domaine Matrot is in the hamlet of Blagny, high on the slopes overlooking Meursault itself and on the border with Puligny. We first visited here in the late nineties and had a memorable dinner with Thierry and his wife Pascale, along with their two young daughters Adèle and Elsa.
Thierry was an early adopter of the "lutte raisonee" approach to reducing the use of herbicides and pesticides, which were widely overused during the sixties. The wines stood out for us at this time with their wonderful purity and minerality. In part, this is the style of Blagny wines, but in those days Thierry was also moving toward a more modern style of winemaking, with less new oak influence than some of his peers. At nearby Domaine Michelot, for instance, the style at this time was still very much leaning towards rich, buttery, and heavily oaked.
Adèle and Elsa are now in their thirties and have taken over the running of the domaine. We have tasted the wines at every opportunity over the intervening years and although quality has continued to rise, there is something still instantly recognizable that shouts both Blagny and Matrot. The 2019 Meursault 1er Cru 'Blagny' saw no new oak, being aged in 1-5 year barrels, allowing the fruit and mineral, saline character of this terroir to sing. Just beginning to drink well now, it will improve greatly with another year or two in bottle and will cellar for a decade with ease.
This is a Meursault for lovers of Puligny, but more than that it is for anyone who loves great white burgundy. Matrot's wines have never joined the coterie of Meursault producers like Lafon, Arnaud Ente and Coche-Dury, whose wines command stratospheric prices, but occupy a niche just below, far more interesting to us, where the wines are of the highest quality but are still relatively affordable. Please email us to secure some for your cellar.
Offered in bond, available December 2022.
"Pale lemon and lime. A more restrained nose, far from the madding crowd of 2019, this Meursault-Blagny has kept its freshness. It offers greater tensile strength than the village Meursault, but not significantly more volume. Lemon apple finish. 90-93 points". Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Tasting Notes"The 2018 Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru comes from a single plot of around half a hectare in the lieu-dit of La Pièce Sous La Bois. It conveys superb terroir expression, almost Puligny-like in its evocation of wet, cold limestone, wet pavement after a sudden shower and light lemon peel elements. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry, a fine bead of acidity slicing through the intense citrus and orange peel notes, which segue into a quite a spicy ginger-tinged finish. I just want more on the aftertaste, which disappears quicker than I would like. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"Once again, and all the more remarkably so for the vintage, Jobard coaxes the restrained cool, pure and airy aromas to emanate from the wonderfully elegant floral, citrus and essence of white-fleshed fruit. The gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors are powerful yet focused with a lovely minerality and just the right blend of bitter citrus zest character that renders the finish super-refreshing. Good stuff that will need to develop more depth but nonetheless, this is already very fine. Sweet spot Outstanding. 91-93 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------Old vines from the early 1950s and the young vines from 2009. Good flowering but the old vines always produce tiny grapes. Coming to this from the St-Aubin 1ers crus and another dimension is clearly evident. This is a complex supple wine with a nuanced range of flavours, mostly in white fruit, with perfectly balanced oak and fine length. Tasted: December 2019. 92-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting NotesThe 1.15-hectare Les Perrières vineyard is situated to the south of the amphitheatre, on mid-slope just beneath the parcel of Le Clos. Exposed south-south-east, the slope here is steeper than it is on the Clos. The vineyard was planted in 1972-1974. The soil, which is derived from alluvial deposits, consists of a mix of deep silt and stony clay. The subsoil features streaks of limestone and limestone marls, while the top layers are littered with stones on the surface. Fermentation and elevage are handled as for the Clos des Prouges. The 2020 vintage will be bottled in February 2022.------"Here too the wood treatment is more prominent still with notes of vanilla and toast fighting a bit with the ripe aromas of poached pear and anise. There is impressive size, weight and power to the bigger and equally generously proportioned flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality before culminating in an elegant but powerful finish. Patience advised here too. 2027+. 91-93 points." Allen Meadows, Burghound, Issue 84------"This wine is from east-facing vines behind Mme. Ferret’s house, and is thus called by the domaine ‘Clos de Jeanne’ although it is in premier cru Les Perrières. It delivers a substantial wine; here the cask ferment (20% new) is more apparent, yet it holds this will and shows approachably toasty ripe apple aromas. There is abundant extract here but the wine remains impressively fresh and lingers seductively on the finish. 92 points." Charles Curtis MW, Decanter------“The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Perrières 1er Cru has a very focused, almost steely bouquet, beautifully defined with neatly integrated oak. White flowers emerge with time in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and wonderful salinity with a vibrant and energetic finish. I cannot wait to taste the finished wine. 91-93 points.” Neal Martin, Neal Martin, Vinous.com, Nov 21 |

Tasting NotesThe premier cru 'Agneux' is located at the top of the slopes in Rully and is just 0.39ha in size. This climat is owned exclusively by de Suremain. Fresh lemon and citrus notes on the nose, confirmed on the palate, with orchard and stone fruits on the palate. Great richness here, not from oak or batonnage, but more a ripeness to the fruit and a texture on the palate. The aromas and flavours are very pure but also layered and subtle, probably as a result of the use of wild yeasts. Impressive breadth and length on the palate, with the pithy-citrus notes reverberating for quite some time. RKL------"Monopole, from vines replanted in 2008. Bottled at Christmas. Pale colour with a light green tint. Very elegant, crisp, not too appley, more in white fruit, pure and quite long, not too rich despite the 14.1% alcohol. Very pretty finish. 88 points." Tasting NotesTremendous delicacy and finesse here, and yet at the same time this is undoudtedly more concentrated than any of the wines which precede it. Tasting NotesThis gives a sense of great density on the nose but then also has impressive tension on the palate. The fruit character is of white stone fruits with lots of delicate floral complexity, but the overall effect is of a very ripe and rich style. RKL "The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet of orange blossom, freshly sliced pear and light nectarine aromas, plus a hint of praline in the background. The palate is well balanced with a honeyed opening, quite rich in style, and yet there is wonderful tension. Appealing tropical notes of passion fruit and guava on the finish. This will be irresistible once bottled. 2022 - 2033. 91-93 points." Neal Martin Vinous.com, Dec 2020 |

Tasting NotesIntense herbal and minty on the nose with lots of savoury aromas, the palate is then quite muted by contrast (at this stage). Feels like a coiled spring with tonnes of energy and some density, will need 3 years or more to unfurl itself. RKL "The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a very tempting bouquet of lemon curd, frangipane, almond and light white chocolate scents. It is still a little oaky, but that will integrate with time. The palate is well balanced with a rounded, marmalade-tinged opening, then veers toward a curiously "fishy" second half, almost like a Chenin Blanc in style! Maybe this is just a phase it’s going through. Give it 3–5 years in bottle. 2022 - 2038. 91-93 points." Neal Martin, Vinous.com, Dec 2020 "Aromas of confit citrus, crisp orchard fruit and mint mingle with hints of petrol and toasted bread in an incipiently complex bouquet, introducing the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, multidimensional and muscular wine built around serious reserves of structuring dry extract and girdled by lively acids. Long and chalky, this is very promising. 93-95+ points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru is tasked with following the stunning Chevalier-Montrachet and, to be frank, it never achieves the same degree of intensity on the nose, coming across rather conservative by comparison. The palate is well balanced with a tang of marmalade enlivening the opening. Very good weight and persistence, as you would demand from a "Monty," yet it does not possess the swagger and hubris of the superior Chevalier. 2025-2045. 93-95 points." The 2020 comprises 40% En la Barre 20% Tillets and the result comes from his previous Meursault blend and the recently purchased Meix Tavaux. Clear pure lemon and lime, with a touch of reduction. Definite austerity here but with fruit volume behind. In fact, there is a wonderful concentration of pure lime infused fruit, with a steely backbone. Very fine long aftertaste. Love it! Tasting NotesThis is a 'negociant' wine, from bought-in fruit, but that doesn't really do it justice. The detail is that the brothers exchange grapes with friends, in this case they give some of their Chassagne fruit in exchange for 'Les Chevalieres' fruit, allowing them to add this appellation to their range. Wonderfully rich and open, with a glycerine-texture and evident oak (25-30% new). This will delight lovers of traditional Meursault. Tasting NotesFrom younger vines in the lower, northern part of Santenay and is mostly a young vine cuvée. The style is similar to Chassagne-Montrachet with lots of richness and texture, presumably influenced by the use of lees stirring and ageing in 30% new wood. Closed on the nose at present (the wines were racked yesterday) but with a huge attack on the palate, opening out to an even bigger mid-palate. Citrus and pineapple fruit character, but still with lots of freshness and a lovely salinity at the end. RKL |

Tasting NotesFrom a walled vineyard in Bouzeron, owned entirely by the Borgeots, hence this is a monopole for the domaine. Clean, green orchard fruits on the nose, pear and green apple, with a fresh citrus note. Based on how cask samples of previous vintages have fleshed-out in bottle, this will be one of the best Clos Carbonades we have tried. RKL |

Tasting NotesThe Clos St Jean premier cru is known best-known for pinot noir, but the Borgeots are unusual in having an excellent holdings of 60-year old chardonnay vines here. The Clos has Benedictine origins dating back a thousand years and faces east, protecting it from some of the hottest temperatures in summer. The 2020 has notable aromas of white flowers and some hazelnut, with very pure white stone fruit and orchard fruits. After this elegant impression, the intensity on the palate is astounding. The Vieilles Vignes is superb every year, but this is the most compelling Clos St Jean we have tasted. RKL |

Tasting NotesThe Borgeots have excellent holdings in Chassagne, with Chardonnay vines up to 60 years old, producing low yields of very concentrated fruit. The elevage is in up to 25% new oak, which is very much in the background, with the pithy texture and 'ciselé' (chiselled) fruit giving this wine its fresh but structured character. Great intensity in 2020, with green orchard and citrus fruits predominating, despite the ripeness of the year. A very classical expression of village-level Chassagne. RKL |

Full, ripe citrus and apple on the palate, excellent acidity, slight glycerin texture lending body and mouthfeel, with a twist of sour-lemon and even some orange on the finish. Tasting NotesMore assertive on the nose and more linear palate than Reculerons, a beautiful tightrope act of focused acidity balancing rich fruit (for a moment I thought of the tension in Michelot’s Meursault wines). Tasting NotesSituated right in the centre of the village of Fuissé, this Clos is just over two "hectares" in size and is planted on a shallow slope that faces east. Although a small parcel of vines was planted in 2003, most of the vineyard dates back to 1956, and is therefore more than 60 years old, making it one of the oldest owned by the domaine. The soil is derived from limestone-rich marls deposited during the upper Bathonian. Fermentations and ageing take place in casks, of which 25% is new and 75% is one to three years old, for 10 months. Ageing is completed in stainless steel tank, on lees, for a further 7 months. The 2020 vintage will be bottled in February 2022.------"Here too the wood treatment is more prominent on the ripe aromas of dried apricot, poached pear and anise. Patience advised here too as this excellent effort brims with upside development potential. 2027+. 93 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound |

Seems to start in the citrus mould but there’s something much riper beneath that wants to come out. Tasting NotesVines planted in 1950-51. 'Morgeot' is a very large premier cru and contains several other smaller premiers crus, of which 'Les Petits Clos' is one. Morgeot wines are often blended from parcels across the vineyard, but this is from a single plot of 2 hectares. Facing south-east, the soils here have lots of white clay and limestone. White fruits on the nose, some peach, smoky citrus, more stone fruits and ginger on the palate. Excellent length. As per the previous vintage, there is something instantly likeable about this wine, all of its complex layers are immediately accessible. RKL |

Tasting NotesFrom younger vines in the lower, northern part of Santenay and is mostly a young vine cuvée. The vineyard is planted with 3% of a chardonnay clone which gives a rich style with almost Muscat-like aromas. The finished style is similar to Chassagne-Montrachet with lots of richness and texture, presumably influenced by the use of lees stirring and ageing in 30% new wood. Balanced citrus and yuzu fruit on the nose, lovely fresh acidity balancing the concentration, some white flowers, tangerines on the palate. Quite different to the tropical notes and glyecrine-texture from some recent vintages of Gravieres. Good energy. RKL |

Tasting Notes"This is part of Les Reisses and will be marked as a 1er on the back label...Moderate wood is present on the markedly floral-scented nose of lemon-lime, apple and a plethora of citrus elements. As is typically the case, the broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration and imposing power while delivering first-class length on the youthfully austere finale. Even by the excellent standards of this wine vintage in and vintage out, this is a big example in 2021. 91-94 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound |

Tasting NotesFrom vines in the 'Les Quarts' Climat, Les Longeays is a vineyard which faces South-East, with deep soils. The grapes here reach maturity early, year after year. The finished wine has great ageing potential.------"The 2021 Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat Les Longeays has a very precise nose, lemon verbena and crushed stone, just a bit of reduction that is gommon in this cuvée during barrel maturation. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Good tension here, a vertical" Pouilly-Vinzelles that lingers nicely in the mouth. 90-92 points." Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes“La Bonnode” is a parcel of 2 hectares, facing east at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson. The vines are mostly bordered by old brush: a sheltered, isolated situation that allows the Bret brothers to cultivate biodynamically.------"Rich yet tense with a great texture and some kumquat flavour. Interesting! 16+ points." Jancis Robinson, Jan '23------"The 2021 Saint-Véran Climat La Bonnode, which is raised in both barrel and vat, offers good intensity on the nose with dewy meadow and yellow fruit aromas. The palate is energetic on the entry with lemon and orange zest, quite sharp and tensile towards the finish. Very fine. 89-91 points." Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"From below Meursault. Clear pale colour. Rather a pretty extrovert nose, good acidity, lemon and orange notes on the palate. Medium bodied with similar persistence. A good sound wine. Drink from 2023-2025. Tasted: October 2022. 86-87 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Another pure pale lemon colour. A racy bouquet more similar to the Puligny than the blended Meursault. More depth of white fruit, less on the apples. A little bit of mango and mandarin. Tasting Notes"Clear pale colour. The nose is the cleanest and the most classic, with more fruit evident from the start. One younger plot lower down was nearly a full crop. This has a beginning, a middle and an end, not the plumpest Charmes of your life, but much the style of wine which Nicolas wants to make and is capable of. Lots of detail here too, nuanced from its varied elevage. Lovely crunch to it, very good. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted: October 2022. 92-95 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"The sample represents the main blend across 15 ha of vineyards. Pale lemon colour. The bouquet is much more classical than the Petit Chablis. Still a little gas to help the freshness which is there anyway, clean and crisp with some volume off fruit, some apples, and good length. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: June 2022. 87-88 points." Tasting Notes"Three barrels, this sample is the blend. It will be racked into new baby tanks he has bought especially. Mid yellow in colour. Here the wood only shows at the fringes because the depth of white Clos fruit completely fills the middle ground. Excellent limestone acidity at the finish, a Clos of considerable promise. Excellent length for the vintage, or indeed against any standard. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: June 2022. 93-96 points." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy |

Tasting Notes"Being raised in eggs, not racked since malolactic. The colour has not yet fallen clear. Also on the richer yellow fruit side, with substantial volume on the palate and slightly greater length. Again, the ripe lemon skin approach. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2022. 89-92 points." Tasting Notes"Sample taken from various barrels, not otherwise yet assembled. There is an oaky element but it works well with this terroir, in complement to the fruit. Quite a wealth on the palate, on the cusp between white and yellow, then a buttery oaky quality to finish – but absolutely not interfering with the fruit. Fine length. This will grow into itself very well. Not new wood. Drink from 2024-2028. Tasted: June 2022. 91-93 points." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy |

Tasting Notes"An attractive, stones and lemon nose, clean and fresh, lightly reductive, with fair to good length. Representative of the vineyard, with just a little extra ripe perfume at the finish. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2022. 89-91 points." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy |

Tasting Notes"Currently on its finings, to bottle in July. A light stony reduction, no that is the 20% new wood speaking, with 50% made in jars. Why the new wood on Séchet? Hard to understand because it has taken over the foreground completely. Salinity at the finish. If the fruit grows in between these two elements it will rate more. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasting Notes"Currently in foudre. Clear lemon yellow. The bouquet is both stylish and typical, stones with lemon zest. Riper and fuller than sometimes, with the disconcerting flesh of this vintage, yet with clarity and enough acidity to finish. Medium length. Drink from 2024-2027. Tasted: June 2022. 90-92 points." Tasting Notes"Still in barrel, to be racked and assembled at the harvest and bottled next spring. Fresh mid yellow colour. Here the oak shows in the form of coconut. Quite a block of flavour, then lactic notes from the barrel, behind which the fruit reasserts itself. Not yet all in harmony, but I think this will come together, such is the volume of fruit. Drink from 2025-2030. Tasted: June 2022. 91-94 points." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy |

Tasting Notes"Aromas of lime zest, freshly baked bread, pear, white flowers and wet stones preface the 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's chalky and structured, with notable concentration, racy acids and a long, resonant finish.
