2022 Château Angludet En Primeur

We only get to say this once this year, so here goes; if there is one wine you should buy en primeur from the 2022 vintage, it's Château Angludet!  Released at £324 per dozen, we fell in love with this the moment we tasted it. William Kelley notes that, amid all the excitement over the vintage, "there are some wines that do actually appear to merit such hyperbole, and the 2022 D'Angludet is one of them". Jane Anson awards 94 points, making this one of the highest-scoring Angludets.

Angludet's location in Margaux made it as susceptible to heat and drought in 2022 as other microclimates, but winemaker Ben Sichel observed that the vines were exceptionally resilient and adaptive, possible payback for the rigorous biodynamic approach used here for some years, which promotes very healthy vines with deep root systems.  A high proportion (13%) of Petit Verdot in the blend adds beautiful aromatic complexity, matched by the intensity on the palate.

Large formats are something of a lottery these days, but we are confident Angludet will be supportive in this and it would be a brilliant wine to own in magnum, double magnums or other sizes.  Do please send us your requests and we will confirm pricing.

Château Angludet, Margaux

Producer Profile

Château Angludet, Margaux

Château Angludet is an AOC wine in the commune of Margaux.  Originally classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, the estate tends not to refer to its Cru Bourgeois status and prefers to operate outside of the classification, equalling many Grand cru classé wines in quality.  The estate has been owned by the Sichel family (co-owners of Palmer) since 1961 and is currently the home of Ben Sichel.

Named after Bertrand d'Angludet, the knight who owned the estate in 1150, it is one of the oldest châteaux in the region.  The 32 hectares of vineyards have remained largely intact and unchanged since 1758.  The free-draining, gravely and sandy soils here are classic Médoc terroir.  The vineyards are planted with 46 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 41 per cent Merlot and 13 per cent Petit Verdot (an unusually high proportion compared to most left bank estates). The estate is currently in conversion to biodynamic viticulture.

Tasting Notes"The Bordelais machine has already begun to alienate potential consumers with exaggerated claims to the effect that 2022 is "the best vintage ever"; yet there are some wines that do actually appear to merit such hyperbole, and the 2022 D'Angludet is one of them. Offering up deep aromas of inky cassis, plums, pencil lead and subtle spices, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a broad attack, ripe acids and a supple, seamless profile, concluding with an expansive finish. 91-93 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"The intensity of the violet-edged colour extraction is pretty remarkable in the Médoc, and this manages to get the balance right between intensity and appeal, alongside vibrant raspberry, brushed damson and bilberry fruit, given lift by pomegranate and and passion fruit, and a curl of smoked earth. One to look out for, should be great value. 35% amphoras, 65% barrels for ageing. 94 points" janeanson.com
