2022 Château Montlandrie En Primeur

Released this morning, there is so much to say about the Durantou wines, Montlandrie, Saintayme, Les Cruzelles and La Chenade, but the critics' outstanding notes and reviews speak for them.  Any doubts about Denis Durantou's legacy are dispelled and it is clear that Noémie Durantou is a talented and brilliant winemaker, putting her own stamp on her family's petits châteaux.  We tasted the new vintage with Noémie and her sister Constance, who both have an understated intensity about them, echoed in the wines.

Montlandrie (£204 per dozen) had a lovely saline character and stood out as one of our favourite vintages from this estate, with scores as high as 94-95 points (JS).

Offered en primeur, landing spring 2025.

Magnums available with £15 ex-VAT bottling surcharge, please enquire re other formats.

Producer Profile

Château Montlandrie, Castillon, Cotes de Bordeaux

Château Montlandrie is an estate in Castillon, Cotes de Bordeaux which was bought in 2009 by the late Denis Durantou, owner of L'Eglise Clinet in Pomerol.  The 12-hectare vineyard has a distinctive ancient stone tower at its centre.

Durantou passed away in 2020 and the wines are now made by his daughters.  The terroir consists of clay and limestone soils.   The vineyard is divided into 15 small parcels and the wines are vinified in 15 correspondingly small vats, an illustration of the level of care taken.

Tasting Notes"The 2022 Montlandrie was picked 8-23 September and matured in 50% new oak. The Cabernet components in the blend defined the nose that leans toward the Left Bank - graphite and tobacco filtering through the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture, white pepper and clove, quite structured for this Castillon Côte de Bordeaux with a similar sapid finish as the Les Cruzelles. Drinking Window: 2029 2043. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, ------"The limestone soils in Castillon are naturally cooler than many parts of Bordeaux across in all vintages, and yet even here the harvest began on September 8 through to 23, highlighting the unusual conditions of the vintage. The resulting wine still reflects the site, with its salinity and grip, and waves of soft rose aromatics. Gentle, supple tannins and fruits, enjoyable and finessed, carefully calibrated given the heat of the summer. 37hl/h yields. 50% new oak, Noemie Durantou winemaker. 93 points""The 2022 Montlandrie is a powerful, driving wine. Beams of tannin and acid run through a core of bright red-toned fruit, lending notable energy and tension throughout. A wine of size and volume, Montlandrie offers tremendous intensity as well as vibrancy. Gorgeous. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2037. 92-94 points" Antonio Galloni,"Based on 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Château Montlandrie has lots of ripe red and black fruits supported by notions of loamy soil, savory spices, and leafy herbs. It's concentrated, medium to full-bodied, has building yet beautiful tannins, and a great finish. 91-93+ points""Sea salt and grilled sea weed. Dark fruit, but so umami. Medium to full body with fine and chewy tannins. Crunchy. 94-95 points"
