2032 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande En Primeur

Released for sale en primeur this morning, 2023 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is offered for sale at £660 per six bottles, a 36% reduction on the previous vintage, despite receiving some rapturous praise from the major critics.

Suckling awards 98-99 points, and the Wine Advocate's William Kelley scores it 97-99.  Neal Martin describes the 2023 as "Outstanding", awarding 96-98 points, and Jane Anson (currently our favourite arbiter of taste when it comes to all things Bordeaux) gives the new vintage an unequivocal 98 points, calling it "Intense and luxurious...A wine you will want to drink and share, and one that is fully at the top of the vintage."

The second wine from this great estate, 2023 Pichon Comtesse Réserve is released at £201 per six bottles.  Last year, we described it as being rather like an Elizabethan miniature, a small but perfectly formed and compact version of the grand vin.  This holds true for the new vintage, and we think that at under £34 per bottle in bond, this is an excellent example of how second wines can offer much of the winemaking genius of top estates, at an affordable price.

Offered en primeur, very limited availability.  Landing spring 2026.

Magnums available with £20 ex-VAT bottling surcharge per six, please enquire for other formats.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Producer Profile

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a Deuxième Cru Classé estate in the commune of Pauillac.  There are many striking things about visiting Pichon Lalande, but one of them is the proximity of Latour...it is easier to walk between these two Pauillac estates than to drive.

Owned since 2006 by the Rouzaud family (owners of Louis Roederer) Pichon Lalande has been pushing at First Growth quality for some years, under the leadership of Nicholas Glumineau.  The estate comprises 90 hectares, with 73 hectares under vine, planted to a density of 9 vines per hectare and averaging 35 years of age.  As of 2020, 28 hectares have been converted to organic and biodynamic viticulture.  The wine spends 18 months in 60% new oak.  13% of the blend is press wine, with 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 23% Merlot.

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was picked from September 6 until 29, with some rain on September 20 in the middle of Cabernet picking. But, Nicolas Glumineau remarked that the vineyard/fruit was in good condition; one day of rain did not affect the quality. The 2023 has a quintessential Comtesse bouquet, displaying pure and expressive black fruit laced with violet and graphite, delivered with impressive delineation. The palate is very refined on the entry. This is armed with beguiling symmetry—poised yet intense on the finish. It doesn’t exert huge grip because it knows it doesn't need to, and it fans out gloriously. Outstanding. 96-98 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"The 2023 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a brilliant wine that will be worth a special effort to track down. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild berries and cassis mingled with licorice, lilac, iris root, violet, burning embers and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, with a deep, layered core of cool fruit that largely conceals it's ultra-refined structuring tannins. At a very measured 13% alcohol and 3.67 pH, it unites all Pichon Comtesse's sensuality with unimpeachable Pauillac classicism. The 2023 is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. 97-99 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"Wow. This is really excellent, with superb finesse and focus. It has tight density that is almost diamond-like in its brilliance. Medium to full body, with a quality of tannin that is incredibly seamless. Like silk in texture. A top Pichon Lalande. From organic and biodynamically grown grapes. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% cabernet franc. May be better than 2022. 98-99 points" jamessuckling.com
