Sell fine wine
Are you looking to sell fine wine from your cellar?
Richard Kihl Ltd helps private clients sell fine wine collections safely and at market prices. We buy classic fine wines from most regions, with a particular interest in cru classé Bordeaux and Burgundy from the Côtes de Nuits, from well-stored collections. We buy in both full cases and single bottles, though interest in the latter is mostly limited to higher-value wines. We are actively seeking consignments of all sizes, anything from a value of one thousand to several hundred thousand pounds.
Selling fine wine in the UK
Private collectors generally have three options when selling fine wine: auction, private sale, or sale to a specialist merchant. Collectors sometimes assume auctions will achieve the highest price. In practice, the net return depends on fees, buyer’s premium and sales commission, unsold risk, and payment delays. Richard Kihl Ltd helps clients sell fine wine safely and at market value, whether a single (high-value) bottle, case, or an entire cellar. We either purchase wines directly, with an immediate confirmed offer and payment, or broker wines by placing them directly with our established trade and private client network.
We regularly handle Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, and other investment-grade wines stored in bond or professionally cellared.
How wine values are calculated
We base valuations on current UK and international trade prices rather than retail asking prices. Provenance, condition and market factors are all considered when providing valuations, which include:
-
Storage history (in bond or home cellar)
-
Original wooden cases vs loose bottles
-
Vintage reputation and drinking window
-
Market demand at the time of sale
-
Quantity available
Contact us for a swift decision and a market valuation of your wines, both in bond and duty paid. In the first instance, please simply e-mail a list of the wines you wish to sell.
Usually, we will make an offer for an outright cash purchase. In some cases, we may recommend offering the wines for sale on a brokerage basis.
For valuations of wines stored duty paid in private cellars, we will usually ask for condition photographs, showing the labels, levels, and capsules. Valuations may vary significantly due to quite minute variations in fill-level, label condition, and capsule condition.
Valuation visits anywhere within the UK can be arranged for significant consignments.
Market Update, February 2026:
The fine wine market has fallen consistently over the last two years, and the Liv-Ex 1000 index is at five-year low. There are some signs of the market stabilising, with a slight increase in demand. We are actively looking to buy fine wine cellars, please contact us for a valuation.
