2019 Château Fontenil (93 points) is from an otherwise unassuming little château in Fronsac, but it has the distinction of being the home of one of Bordeaux's most famous winemakers, Michel Rolland.  This vibrant, concentrated vintage of Fontenil is excellent value, and we have a special ex-château parcel to offer to you at just £195 per dozen in bond.

The list of top Bordeaux estates where Rolland has consulted is endless but includes names like Angélus, Ausone, Léoville Poyferré and Pavie, along with estates like St. Supery, Harlin and Staglin in Napa, and wineries in at least ten other countries.  He and his oenologist wife Dany purchased a pretty château in 1986 and set about adding a plot of adjacent vineyards named Fontenil, giving the estate its name. A new winery and barrel cellar were completed by 1999, allowing the Rollands to incorporate all of their expertise into the winemaking at Fontenil.

Re-tasting the 2019 recently, we found a certain polished elegance as well as power and use of oak elevage that marks this out as a Rolland wine.  The critics agree and as Jeb Dunnuck says, it "dishes out tons of pleasure" for just £16.25 per bottle in bond!

Please let us know if you would like to add this wine to your cellar.

Offered ex-château, available late autumn 2025.

Tasting Notes"The 2019 Fontenil has closed down quite a bit post bottling. That's probably a good thing for its long-term prospects, though. Dark raspberry, blood orange, spice, new leather and menthol open with a bit of time in the glass. Perfumed floral accents brighten up the finish. There is a lot to look forward to, but a bit of patience is a must. 2024-2034. 93 points." Antonio Galloni, Jan '22------"The 2019 Fontenil has evolved nicely during its barrel maturation, developing more detail and precision on the nose of red fruit sous-bois and candied orange peel. The palate is medium- bodied, fresh and vibrant, with supple tannins, fine structure and a silky-smooth, persistent finish. Superb. 2024-2039. 93 points." Neal Martin, Dec '21------"The 2019 Château Fontenil is, I suspect, mostly Merlot, and it's another fine Fronsac in this vintage. Ripe black cherries, forest floor, Asian spices, and chocolate notes all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied, ripe, and sexy on the palate, with sweet tannins, no hard edges, and wonderful overall balance. It dishes out tons of pleasure and is a much more approachable, forward wine compared to the Le Défi de Fontenil while still possessing the class to evolve for 10-15 years. 2022-2037. 93 points."
