"...one of the greatest—if not the best—releases of modern-era Grange...98 points."  Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"...truly it is one of the world's great wines...98 points."  Jane Anson, Bordeaux Insider

Newly released for sale en primeur via the Bordeaux Place, the 2021 vintage of Australian wine legend Penfolds Grange receives 98 points from James Suckling, Jane Anson and Erin Larkin of The Wine Advocate, the latter calling it a contender for the best-ever release of this wine in modern times.   We are delighted to offer our allocation at £2,290 per case of six, along with the new vintages of Penfolds' other top Shiraz wines, Bin 798 and St Henri, and also their top Cabernet SauvignonsBin 707 and Bin 169, and their superb Yattarna Chardonnay.

Grange was first made in 1951 by Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert, who set out to make a Shiraz-based Australian wine capable of ageing for twenty years or more.  Following a disastrous tasting with the Penfolds board in 1957, he was instructed to discontinue the project, but carried on making Grange in secret, hiding it away in the Penfolds cellars until it finally received international recognition with the 1960 vintage.  Reviewing the latest release, Erin Larkin describes the 2021 growing season as magnificent, producing a ripe, powerful iteration of a wine that practically defines both of those terms.

Bin 707 and Bin 169 were first produced in 1964 and 1973, respectively, the latter being re-launched in 2008.  These wines are only made in exceptional vintages, from blocks of exceptionally old Cabernet Sauvignon vines.  Bin 707 is blended to represent the Penfolds' house style, whereas 169 is designed to capture the essence of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the famous 'Terra Rossa' soils.

Turning to Penfolds' other top Shiraz wines, production of the St Henri Shiraz dates back to 1954, but the RWT Bin 798 was first made as recently as the 1990s.  With the characteristic Australian talent for plain-speaking, RWT stands for 'Red Wine Making Trial', an internal company name for the project that stuck!  With scores for these in the 95-97 point range, they give a chance to experience some of the same expertise shown in Grange, at a more affordable price.

Last but not least, the Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay was created using grapes from a range of cool-climate areas like Tasmania and the Adelaide Hills, to produce a powerful but refined wine capable of long-ageing, despite being just 12.5% abv.  Erin Larkin scores it 97 points, describing it as "a wine for the ages, one that shows well decades after release".
