This morning sees the en primeur release of two top names from the right bank. 2024 Château L'Evangile is offered at £570 per six and scores 98-99 points from Suckling, whilst 2024 La Conseillante is offered at £707 per six and scores 95-98 points from Galloni.
Being Lafite-Rothschild's sibling estate in Pomerol means Evangile also has impressive winemaking expertise behind it, and it's hard to argue with a release price that makes it £274 per dozen cheaper than La Conseillante, whilst achieving a potential score that is just one point shy of being perfect.

Château Evangile
Château L'Evangile dates back to the 18th century, but has been owned by the Rothschilds since 1990. Lying in between Petrus and Cheval Blanc, Evangile has nevertheless remained relatively below the radar in this country. The 22 hectares of vineyards lie on a band of gravel that runs through the classic Pomerol clay. L’Évangile is planted mainly with Merlot (79%), with Cabernet Franc (20%) and some Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).

Tasting Notes"The 2024 L'Évangile offers good up-front intensity but then loses some of its depth on the mid-palate and finish. Black fruit, espresso, licorice, cloves and mocha confer an impression of gravitas. Élevage is 50% new oak, 25% foudre, 8% amphora and the rest in once-used barrels. Something about the oak profile does not feel optimal, as if the oak is mismatched to the wine. Élevage will be critical here, as the 2024 is quite forbidding at this stage. Even so, this is strong showing in a challenging year for a vineyard with relatively young vines that was largely replanted between 2002 and 2010. 2032-2049. 91-93 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com------"Savoury plum, soft tannins, a touch of chalk, graphite, lovely fragrant florals, and extremely finessed. A wine that will age with grace. In the cellar, this was one of their longest macerations on record, up to 28 days, carefully measured, Harvest 18 September to 2 October, 22hl/h yield. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it's beautifully balanced, has a layered, elegant mid-palate, and ripe, firm, yet polished tannins.
