Released this morning for sale en primeur, 2024 Château Montrose is offered at £507 per six in bond, a 30% reduction on last year's release, making it the least expensive release since the 2013 vintage.
Scores are equal to those for Haut Brion and Margaux and higher than some of those for Lafite-Rothschild and Mouton! From last year, only vines on the heart of the historic Montrose estate (on 'Terrasse IV' gravel terroir) are used in the grand vin and this year the top wine accounts for just a third of the estate's production. Reducing the quantity of wine produced in the pursuit of quality has helped to ensure that Montrose is one of the wines of the vintage this year. Château Montrose
Château Montrose is a Deuxième Cru Classé estate in the commune of Saint-Estèphe. In the 18th century, the land at Montrose was primarily used for hunting. The origin of the name is uncertain but one story is that the pinkish heather which grew here earned it the name 'Mont Rose'. In the early nineteenth century the land part of the Calon-Ségur estate. It was first planted fully with vines in 1815, by Etienne Théodore Dumoulin.
The 95 hectares of vines are on a single plot of gravel and sandy soils over clay. Positioned close to the Gironde estuary, the vineyards benefit from the thermo-regulation effect of the river, often avoiding frosts when other estates are affected. The vines are divided into over 80 small plots, some just a few metres, with micro-vinification used to treat each plot uniquely.
The estate is owned by the Bouygues family (Martin and Olivier Bouygues own a construction and communications empire in France which includes TV channel TF1). Melissa Bouygues is CEO at Montrose and the family also own Château Tronquoy Lalande, along with Clos Rougeard in Saumur and a share in Domaine Henri Rebourseau in the Côte de Nuits. The second wine of the estate is Dame de Montrose.

Tasting Notes"A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Montrose is a serious, muscular effort that numbers among the wines of the vintage. Unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, burning embers, cigar wrapper and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a lively spine of acidity, rich structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish. With both the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon recorded at Montrose and a rather low pH of 3.55, it will surely number among the longest lived 2024 Bordeaux. 93-95 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"Beautifully deep colour, this shows chalk, violet flowers, peony, fragrant and enticing floral profile compared to so many in the vintage, this is excellent, cocoa bean, cassis, depth, layers and concentration - one of the wines of the vintage. 15% press wine, a little more than usual. The 2024 is a super-classic, nervy Montrose that will need a number of years to be at its most expressive.
