Released for sale en primeur this morning, 2024 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is offered for sale at £531 per six bottles, a 20% reduction on the previous vintage. Successive recent vintages have ensured the status of Pichon Lalande as a benchmark for the top-performing châteaux in Bordeaux and quality is assured here practically in any vintage. We found the '24 to be a lovely svelte, elegant wine with an amazingly long finish, which several of the critics have also observed.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a Deuxième Cru Classé estate in the commune of Pauillac. There are many striking things about visiting Pichon Lalande, but one of them is the proximity of Latour...it is easier to walk between these two Pauillac estates than to drive.
Owned since 2006 by the Rouzaud family (owners of Louis Roederer) Pichon Lalande has been pushing at First Growth quality for some years, under the leadership of Nicholas Glumineau. The estate comprises 90 hectares, with 73 hectares under vine, planted to a density of 9 vines per hectare and averaging 35 years of age. As of 2020, 28 hectares have been converted to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The wine spends 18 months in 60% new oak. 13% of the blend is press wine, with 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 23% Merlot.

Tasting Notes"The 2024 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande offers up attractive aromas of cassis, burning embers, tobacco leaf and fresh mint, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and polished palate that's seamless and suave, concluding with a moderately persistent finish. A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc that attained 12.7% alcohol, it's a charming effort that will offer a broad drinking window. 91-93 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"Deep garnet-purple colored. Shoots out of the glass with vibrant notes of black raspberries and black currants, plus hints of iris, fertile loam, cardamom, and graphite. Predominantly black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and light cedar scents unfold in the glass, resolutely classic in style, strict yet focused and defined. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, evidencing the much lighter extraction exacted by Nicolas Glumineau. This results in an impressively balanced Pichon-Comtesse, lightly spiced with hints of cracked black pepper towards the finish, dare I say, cut in a "Lafite" style. Though without the ambition of the '22, this keeps within the limitations set by the growing season.
