Vieux Château Certan
Vieux Château Certan is an estate in the commune of Pomerol. One of the oldest estates in Pomerol, it was established at the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. The original château was built in 1770 by Demay de Certan. The current château was built in 1858 by Charles de Bousquet. In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, purchased the property. Today it is owned by Alexandre Thienpont. Thienpont is committed to low-intervention winemaking, doing as little as possible to intervene in the natural expression of the fruit in the wine.
The 14 hectares of vines planted in a single block. with 23 plots, each individually managed according to soil type, grape variety planted, and age of vines. The Merlot (70%) is planted on clay soils, Cabernet Franc (25%) on gravel-clay plots and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) on mainly gravel soils. The average vine age is 50 years.

Tasting Notes"A blend of 71% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 Vieux Château Certan opens in the glass with brooding aromas of dark berries, cedar, cigar wrapper, crushed mint and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, with good density for the vintage and sweet structuring tannins, it concludes with a sapid, slightly earthy finish. That Cabernet is articulated on the nose: graphite and light tobacco scents percolating through the mainly black fruit. This has plenty of freshness and more fruit than some other Pomerol cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is much more weight and density on the back palate than nearly all of its peers. Distinctly peppery and quite spicy in style, this is one of the few to transcend the strict limitations of the growing season. In some ways, it is an uncompromising VCC that does not have the finesse of the greatest vintages I have tasted over the years, yet there is flavour and substance packed inside this nascent wine. Deeply impressive.
