We are delighted to offer the latest vintage from Champagne Krug, the 2013, released this week.
The 2013 growing season was marked by pronounced contrasts and challenges, ultimately culminating in a harvest of exceptional character. The year began with a cold, wet winter and a cool, rainy spring, which delayed budburst and flowering, pushing the vine’s growth cycle back by about two weeks. Flowering was uneven and late, leading to reduced yields, particularly for Chardonnay in the Côte des Blancs. However, July and August brought exceptionally hot and dry weather, promoting rapid grape maturity, and September rains helped the berries swell before drier conditions allowed for optimal ripening.
Harvest commenced on September 25th and extended through October 16th, a window that allowed for the careful selection of grapes at optimal ripeness. The result was superb Chardonnay, displaying crystalline purity and finesse; Pinot Noir, notable for its structure and restraint; and Pinot Meunier, contributing length and subtlety to the blend.
Krug 2013 is composed of 41% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay, and 21% Meunier. Each varietal was vinified in small individual plots, part of Krug’s meticulous approach, allowing the distinct character of each parcel and each village to be preserved and expressed in the final assemblage.
