We have managed to source a small parcel of mature cru classé Margaux to offer to you, from Marquis d'Alesme, aged in professional cellars and with a 96 point score, available at just £360 per dozen in bond.
A decade on from the vintage, 2016 Château Marquis d'Alesme is showing beautifully. We've already enjoyed plenty of 2016s from cru bourgeois estates, but the better crus classés like this one are only just coming into their own. Perfectly poised, with a classic Margaux nose portraying both power and elegance, we found dense red and black fruits, violets, cedar, graphite, black tea, olive and tobacco, and mature tannins on the palate, but still with plenty of youthful energy.
Quality at Marquis d'Alesme (formerly known as Marquis d'Alesme Becker) has been rising since it was taken over in 2009 by Nathalie Perrodo. The Perrodo family also owns Labegorce and La Tour du Mons, both also in Margaux. Massive investment in the château saw the construction of a new winery and the introduction of organic viticulture (2016 was the first vintage produced organically). This increase in quality in the vineyard and in precision in the winemaking shines through in the bottle, especially so in a lovely vintage like 2016. At just £30 per bottle in bond, this is superb for the money, so please don't miss out and order some for your cellar today!

Tasting Notes"This is a vintage with plenty of structure, and things remain a little closed even at 7 years old. Give it time to unroll the blackberry and bilberry fruits, and enjoy the oyster shell salinity on the mouthwatering finish, together with a curl of crayon, woodsmoke and soy that add length and an umami touch. Harvest October 4 to October 14. Marjolaine de Coninck technical director and CEO, owner Nathalie Perrodo. 95 points" janeanson.com------"Talk about a gem in the vintage, I was blown away by the 2016 Château Marquis d'Alesme Becker on each of the three times I was able to taste it. This estate has been on an undeniable roll since the arrival of Marjolaine de Conicnck in 2009, and the 2016 is unquestionably the best yet. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up in 65% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by an essence of Cabernet bouquet that includes loads of crème de cassis, blueberries, graphite, crushed rocks, sandalwood, and violets. Almost Saint Julien in style, this beauty is laser-focused on the palate, medium to full-bodied, brilliantly textured, and has a blockbuster finish. It deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 25-30 years. Bravo! 96 points" Jebdunnuck.com------"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Marquis d'Alesme Becker leaps from the glass with gregarious notions of plum preserves, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake with hints of potpourri, star anise, menthol and tapenade. Full, rich, firm and grainy, with fantastic freshness lifting the densely packed palate, it has a long, beautifully fragrant finish. 96 points" Lisa Perotti-Brown, RobertParker.com |
