Tasting Notes"The 2022 Chardonnay Reserve comprises fruit from the Greyton homestead, which is oxidatively handled and fermented for 11 months in 500-liter barrels (25% new). After swirling to address the reduction, it reveals concentrated scents of dried honey, melted candle wax, orange blossom and a touch of grilled walnut. The palate is well-balanced with mineral-infused slightly tropical fruit, quince and hints of guava that merge into a more mineral-driven taut finish. Quite multi-faceted Chardonnay, this will age with style and panache. If that Corton-Charlemagne is a bit over-priced…and it probably is…then you know where to come. Tasting Notes"I'm very happy with 12% alcohol," says Samantha O'Keefe of the small quantities of this late-picked Syrah from Greyton's distinctly cool climate. Featuring 50% whole bunches, it's a taut, refreshing, intensely peppery, sage and oregano-scented style with cranberry and pomegranate fruit, spicy, savoury tannins, deftly handled 32% new wood and a pithy finish. Drink 2024-30. 95 points" Tim Atkin------"The 2021 Syrah Estate Reserve, which comes from the vineyard most damaged by the fire in 2020, is 50% whole bunches and aged in 500 and 700-liter barrels, 25% new. The potent nose of raspberry coulis, blueberry and touches of cough candy, taking its time to settle in the glass and lose it initial exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled, slightly chalky tannins. Its fresh and vibrant, sapid towards the finish, with a long, Côte-Rôtie-like aftertaste and garrigue notes filtering through with time. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec components are from the original estate vineyard planted in 1969. Aromatically, the wine leads with sumac spices and paprika, cassis, mulberry and pink peppercorns, dried bay leaf, tobacco and even a hint of tapenade. Tasting Notes"The 2022 Shiraz Underhill aromatically leads with resinous tobacco character, raspberry and mortadella, cassis, perfume and dried flowers. In the mouth, the wine is lean and full of whole-bunch characters, although I believe this only makes up about 20% of the wine. With dried orange peel and bergamot, musk sticks (fondant candy), lavender and blueberries, this is elegant but lean and bunchy. It's a style and done well. From an eight-acre, clay-based soil Shiraz block with a westerly aspect planted in 1973. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Tasting Notes“Savoury, smokey and saline, the 2023 Wild Sauvignon is taut and tense, almost un-Marlborough-like, but over the course of 24 hours it reveals passion fruit and elderflower notes. If you haven't got that sort of time on your hands, pull out the decanter. The wine's sophistication comes not from its flavours but its shape and athletic acid profile. The texture intrigues with its focus and push-and-pull tension. The lip-smacking, medium long finish is drawn out with smokey and floral talc as well as classic passion fruit and elderflower. This has a very complex bouquet with wild honey, orange pith and fine mineralité. It just soars from the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation. This is very intense on the nose, very complex and Cornas-like: black fruit, volcanic rock, cracked black pepper and a touch of thyme. Wonderful delineation and it really evolves in the glass. The palate has exquisite balance, a keen line of acidity, touches of allspice and white pepper, gaining depth with a structured finish that has wonderful symmetry.
