The Rhône Valley

Our Rhône list focuses on rare bottles of older vintages from collectible domaines, including Jaboulet and Chapoutier's Selection Parcellaire (which we offer on release each year).  In recent years we have grown our offering to include wines from small domaines in both the Northern and Southern Rhône, offering a wonderful diversity of terroir character and superb value.

Tasting Notes"An incredible wine that I wish I had a case of is the 2005 Cote Rotie from the young Stephane Ogier. Exhibiting a head turning bouquet of smoked meats, spice, cassis and black olives, this beauty hits the palate with thrilling purity of fruit, full-bodied richness and a layered, seamless texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. While this is the base cuvee of the estate, it trumps the vast majority of wines in the vintage. Drink 2015 - 2025. 95 points" Jeb Dunnock, RobertParker.com

Tasting Notes"Like the base cuvée, yet even richer, more powerful, and decadent, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Quet is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that was raised in very old barrels and oak tanks. Full-bodied, ripe, sexy and about as hedonistic as it gets in 2015, this beauty has tons of sweet tannin, a huge mid-palate, and big finish. It's an incredible wine that's guaranteed to raise your heart rate (it did for me anyway). 99 points" Jebdunnuck.com

Tasting Notes"The flagship wine, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape...features delicate floral scents and ample cherry and licorice aromas. Somehow, it manages to be full-bodied and almost creamy in texture but without much weight, then it ends powerfully, with a flourish of rich Mexican chocolate on the long, silky finish. It should drink well for up to 20 years. 2017-2035. 94 points." (JC) The Wine Advocate, Oct 2017------"A wine with playful, attractive character. An array of red, blue and purple fruits. Gently spicy, chalky and fragrant, it has a very supple, fleshy and layered palate with a web of fine, smooth and supple tannins. Extremely elegant and composed. A long draw on the finish. Great depth and drive. This will live super long. Try after 2020. 96 points." (JS) Jamessuckling.com, Jan 2018

Tasting Notes"Certified organic. Grenache (oldest vines, terraces at 350 m), Syrah, Roussanne. On limestone and facing north and east. Traditional fermentation, aged 12–18 months in 600-litre barrels. Bottle-aged for a further two years before release. Pure, intense cherries with a dusting of cocoa powder and sumac and warm middle-eastern spices. Tannins like hand-tooled iron, weighty, compact, broad and powerful but with flow and curve and beauty. Despite the 15% alcohol and those tannins, the wine has an innate gentleness. The fruit is so pure, so silver-spun with acidity, so cupped around the tannins and the heat, that it carries itself with an exquisite balance and there isn't a notch of heat until the very, very end. In fact there is mouth-watering freshness. A pot-pourri of dried florals and spices on the end, lifting it through and up and into a long, soaring end. I'd struggle to not drink this now! (TC)". 17.5 points, Jancisrobinson.com Feb 2020

Tasting Notes"...a ripe, sexy wine I'd be happy to drink. Black raspberries, pepper, new leather, camphor, and garrigue notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, ultra-fine, seamless 2018 that has plenty of fruit and a great finish. Enjoy bottles over the coming 4-6 years. 92 points." Jebdunnock.com------"Unfortunately, yields are down 50%, but the 2018 Côtes Du Rhône Villages Plan De Dieu will certainly be an outstanding wine. Based on 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre from the Plan De Dieu appellation, which is located on the pebbly soils spanning the valley floor between Cairanne and Vacqueyras, it was completely destemmed and is still aging mostly in neutral barrels, with 30% being new. Terrific Grenache-driven notes of strawberries, black raspberries, garrigue, and crushed flowers all emerge from this more medium to full-bodied, seamless, incredibly elegant 2018. The vintage’s plushness (yet freshness) is front and center, it has fine tannins, and it’s going to put a smile on your face right out of the gate. 91-93 points." Jebdunnock.com

Tasting Notes“Assembled from 14 different plots (each vinified and aged separately for the first year), the 2019 Gigondas boasts lovely aromas of garrigue, spice, orange zest, liquorice, black cherries and raspberries....full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a long, softly dusty finish. It lacks the easy approachability of the 2018 but is more concentrated and should age particularly well. 93-95 points.” Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Mar 2021------“A full-bodied, harmonious blend, not quite as aggressively concentrated as his single-vineyard wines this year. Very tannic still, and well balanced despite its enormous size. Long finish, saturated with thick, fine tannins. The oak is quite prominent for now, but there's enough fruit to match it. Will be good when it's ready....95 points.” Matt Walls, Decanter.com, 7th December 2020

Tasting Notes"Flavors of preserved plums and black-cherry compote are accented by hints of cocoa powder, char and salty minerality here. Sourced from younger vines (10-30 years old) of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre and vinified entirely in stainless steel, it offers a similar intensity of fruit and savory nuances as prestige bottlings from this producer, but with a bit more ease for youthful enjoyment. Ready now but likely to improve through 2027 at least. 92 points." Wine Enthusiast Magazine Nov 2021

Tasting NotesLeaps out of the glass with vibrant, crushed rock mineral aromas and fresh pear fruit. The acidity on the palate is not high but the overall impression is of freshness, balanced by a slightly oily texture which lends weight. RKL------"A beautifully fresh and balanced Saint-Péray, rich and generous but with a good freshening acid bite. There's a pleasing support of grilled nut oak in the background bringing a bit of complexity and length, it works well. A very classic, unexaggerated and drinkable depiction of the terroir. Drinking Window 2020 - 2022. 92 points." Matt Walls, Decanter------"70% Roussanne, 30% Marsanne. Winemaker Laure Colombo (daughter of Jean-Luc). Fermented in 228- and 400-litre oak. Young vines. After a run of white burgundies, this smells so exotic and rich: apricot, orange, even though it is not a sweet wine. Smells as if there was some botrytis but apparently not – just very ripe. Powerful, intense exotic and stone fruits, full-bodied and complete even though the acidity is moderate. A lovely wine. Much richer than a stereotypical St-Péray. Lots of spice on the finish. GV. 14% Drink 2021-2028. 17 points" jancisrobinson.com (JH)

Tasting Notes"Looking at the flagship 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from this benchmark estate, it reveals a denser ruby/purple color as well as stunning notes of smoked red and black fruits, crushed rocks, peppery garrigue, and truffly earth. Hitting the palate with full-bodied richness, it stays tight and compact on the palate, with terrific mid-palate depth, a focused, structured mouthfeel, and one great finish. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape from the Brunier family that’s going to benefit from upwards of 5-7 years of bottle age and have 30+ years of overall longevity. 96-98 points." Tasting Notes"This 2.5ha Syrah vineyard is planted on poor, granitic soil in the heart of Saint-Joseph appellation. The harshness of the soil makes vines work extra hard, delivering long lived, structured wines." Chapoutier------"Touch of fresh peat and seaweed on the nose at this early stage. Lovely weight and freshness on the palate, very clear and detailed. Tannins are measured, the wine has a crispness and even a touch of black pepper. Earthy, spicy style, not overly ripe or concentrated - you see the structure with clarity. Will drink well young, and offer a lot of pleasure, showing terroir and complexity without great concentration or length. Great balance and freshness however. Drinking Window 2023 - 2030. 94 points." Tasting Notes"100% Viognier. Aged nine months in 100% new oak. Pure and refined with stone-fruit and toasty notes, the oak, though, well integrated. Reserved on the palate but fine, round and persistent. Slight glow of alcohol but plenty in reserve. Drink 2023-2030. 16.5 points" jancisrobinson.com (JL)------"While the 2020 Condrieu la Doriane matured entirely in new oak, there's just a hint of toast on the nose. The rest of the bouquet features a kaleidoscopic swirl of floral and spice notes with melon and white peach. Medium to full-bodied, it's exquisitely expansive and silky in texture, yet it remains refreshing on the lengthy, mouthwatering finish. Drink 2021 - 2027. 93 points" Joe Czerwinski, RobertParker.com------"hat a fascinatingly smoky and flinty nose this Condrieu has! I love the touches of vanilla bean, mandarin orange peel and jasmine that emerge as you swirl the glass. It masters a remarkable balance on the expansive and subtle palate, a hint of bitterness helping to balance the softness and creaminess of the long finish. Drink or hold. 95 points" jamessuckling.com------"Just about pure perfection and one of the finest Condrieu to pass my lips, the 2020 Condrieu La Doriane offers an insane bouquet of grilled pineapple, charcoal, crushed stone, acacia flowers, and white peach. It picks up an incredibly sense of salinity on the palate and is full-bodied, has blockbuster concentration, remarkable purity and focus, and a great finish. Tasting Notes"The 2020 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert boasts effusive aromas of cracked pepper, black olives, cherries and blueberries. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers some soft dusty tannins and decent length, but it's surprisingly lacking in concentration. 89-91 points" Joe Czerwinski, RobertParker.com------“Yet another beautiful 2020, Thalabert is deep, dark and brooding in this vintage, and it has an almost Italianate liquorice and black-fruited theme underpinning its Syrah characters. This makes it an indulgent treat, and the palate is more velvety and forward than any young Thalabert I have tasted. In addition, it has the stuffing to age well, too. What more could you ask for? (Drink 2023 – 2033)“ 18+ points" Matthew Jukes------"Pure and lifted with the aroma of fresh, berry fruit. Less dense than imagined but pure, fresh and juicy with extremely fine-grained tannins. Refined and almost approachable but history says it will age. 16.5+ points" jancisrobinson.com (JL)

Tasting NotesVery pure notes of black cherry, blackcurrant and bramble fruits on the nose, with peppercorns and herbs on the nose and an impression of freshness, more elegant than in 2019. Tasting Notes"Subdued but pure and profound. Tightly wound on the palate, the tannins powerful but refined, the fruit deep but underplayed. A saline edge that runs from start to finish adding length at the end. Needs to unfurl and expand but clearly has potential. 17.5 points" jancisrobinson.com (JH)------"After the past several vintages, the 2020 Hermitage La Chapelle will need to add significant richness and concentration if it is to compete at that level. That said, it is still an excellent wine, with classic aromas of crushed stone, cassis, espresso and black olives. It's full-bodied, fine and silky, giving an impression of great elegance on the lingering finish. 93-95 points" Joe Czerwinski, RobertParker.com------“While there are faint roasted coffee bean notes here, which hint at the warm summer, and exotic rose and musk characters that only ever emerge in concentrated vintages, this is a masterclass in restraint and self-awareness. While this 2020 perhaps lacks the overall gravitas and high-rise tannins of the majestic 2019 vintage, this is a very seductive La Chapelle and one that will appeal to lovers of textural, velvety Syrahs. Tasting NotesFrom viognier vines near Chavanay, on muscovite-rich granite. The wine spends 9 months in barriques, on the lees, with no racking and regular stirring. A delightful, text-book expression of viognier with lots of freshness and purity of expression to the fruit, encompassing peach, quince, apricot, quince and citrus. Slightly honeyed too, but the overall impression is savoury and fresh. Would be wonderful paired with sashimi! RKL

Tasting NotesFrom 1.5 ha of south-facing terraced vines on Coteau de Semons, in Tupin-Semons commune. 'Bassenon' is named after the stream at the foot of the hill. Granite and gneiss soils, planted to 90% syrah, 10% viognier. The grapes are picked by hand, then sorted, crushed and partially destemmed in the cellar. Open, temperature-controlled vatting for about 3 weeks, with regular cap-punching and pumping-over. Malolactic-fermented in barriques with native yeasts, before maturation for 18 months in barriques. A step-up in finesse from the St.-Joseph's, but still with wonderfully ripe and intense fruit concentration. An elegant, floral note of violets on the nose, presumably from the Viognier, which also adds a peach character to the palate, lifting the red and black fruits enormously. Very refined tannins, masses of energy. Could be enjoyed on landing and for over the next decade. A very accessible, modern and technically correct interpretation of Côte-Rôtie which should bring this appellation lots of new followers. RKL

Tasting NotesFrom Marsanne and Rousanne vines on the sandy, granitic hillsides in the commune of Chavanay. The grapes are hand-picked; then sorted and pressed in the cellar. Alcoholic and malolactic fermented in barriques with native yeasts, followed by 9 months in barriques, on the lees, with no racking and regular stirring. Luscious fruit also layered and complex; stone fruits and acacia honey notes on the nose. Fleshy and fruity on the palate, with some minerality adding freshness. RKL

Tasting NotesOn shallow, granitic, soils, planted to 100% syrah, which is hand-picked, sorted, crushed and partially destemmed in the cellar. Fermented in open, temperature-controlled vats for about 3 weeks, with regular cap-punching and pumping-over. Malolactic-fermented in barriques with native yeasts. The wine spends 18 months in barriques. Finer tannins than the 'Pierres Sèches', but still approachable early. Complex nose of dark fruit, spice and liquorice. Some crushed-rock mineral character on the finish. Silky, fine-grained tannins, should drink beautifully for well over a decade. RKL

Tasting NotesBiousse is a single vineyard in the south of Saint-Péray, planted with Marsanne, on red clay and granitic scree. The wine is fermented partly in barriques and partly in larger casks, before 9 months' ageing in the same formats. Apple citrus fruits with some floral notes, honeysuckle, and a fresh minerality on the palate, which is long and quite intense. Saint-Péray whites definitely should be drunk more! RKL

Tasting NotesLes Candives' is the local name for Syrah. Granitic, shallow soils. The grapes are hand-picked, sorted, destemmed and crushed. Alcoholic-fermentation is in open vats with native yeasts, followed by 8 months in barriques. Superb nose with intense black fruits and so much energy on the palate, light on its feet, despite the concentrated, juicy dark fruit, spice and liquorice. RKL
