2020 Château Fombrauge En Primeur

2020 Château Fombrauge is released en primeur at just just £252 per dozen in bond.  Scoring 92-94 points from Neal Martin and 94-95 points from Suckling (who asks, rhetorically, if this is their best ever vintage) it looks like a superb value Saint-Émilion in a great year for Right Bank wines.

Producer Profile

Château Fombrauge, Saint-Émilion

Château Fombrauge is a Grand Cru Classé estate in Saint-Émilion.  Vines were planted here by 1599 but the estate-proper was established in the 17th Century.  It takes its name from Dumas de Fombrauge, the owner and a member of the French government.  Since 1999 it has been owned by Bernard Magrez, who also owns Pape Clement, La Tour Carnet and Clos Haut Perayguey in Sauternes.  Magrez is notable for having made his fortune through working in the wine trade in Bordeaux (as opposed to banking), although he did attend school with Francois Pinault.  In total, he owns 43 estates in different vineyad locations around the world.

Fombrauge is the largest estate in Saint-Émilion at 59 hectares, planted to 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.  The grapes are selected plot by plot.  The wine is fermented in a mixture of wooden vats, steel and concrete tanks, before ageing oak barriques (40% new).
