2020 Château Talbot En Primeur

2020 Château Talbot is released for sale En Primeur this morning.

Talbot (£478 per dozen) has been undergoing a renaissance under Jean-Michel Laporte (previously at La Conseillante) and Jane Anson describes the 2020 as "a great Talbot, a real success for the château (95 points)".  The other major critics are in general agreement, notable in that Talbot is often not the easiest wine to taste from cask and which often improves in bottle.  Galloni describes it as "hugely promising (95 points)."  We found it elegant and beautifully balanced between charming aromatic fruit aromas and a darker, more intense palate, perfectly framed by judicious use of oak.

Producer Profile

Château Talbot, St.-Julien Cru Classé

Château Talbot is a Quatrièmes Cru Classé in Saint-Julien.  The name originates from the former owner of the land,  Connétable Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, a famous English military commander, who was defeated at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. The vineyard extends to 102 hectares in the heart of Saint-Julien.

The estate, along with Château Senejac and Domaine Saint Andrieu in Provence, is owned by Nancy Bignon-Cordier and her family.  Often described with terms like 'faithful' and 'reliable', Talbot now has a new injection of dynamism from the appointment last years of Jean-Michel Laporte.

After training with Jean-Claude Berrouet at JP Moueix, Laporte spent almost 14 years at La Conseillante and so his appointment suggests serious intent to improve quality here even further.

Tasting Notes“Cask sample taken 2 April. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Aged in barrel, 60% new. Dark crimson. Savoury, saline nose. Luscious palate entry with ripe fruit that almost smothers the tannin. A very good effort from Talbot with velvety tannins in profusion and some winning perfume too. This is doing well under ex-Conseillante Jean-Michel Laporte. 13.3% Drink 2029 – 2046. 17 points.”, Apr 21------"The 2020 Talbot has a fragrant nose with black cherries, bilberry, wild mint and chalk, quite harmonious and gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, almost candied opening, predominantly red berry fruit laced with mint and orange zest, and a liberal sprinkling of black pepper. I admire the way this Talbot builds so that it finishes with a flourish. This may well land at the top of my banded score. 92-94 points" Neal Martin,"The 2020 Talbot is a hugely promising wine. It offers up an exotic mélange of inky dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, gravel, lavender and menthol. Brooding in the glass, with broad shoulders and tons of intensity, the 2020 is a Talbot that marries power, breadth and savory intensity with notable stylishness and tons of personality. Impressive. 92-95 points" Antonio Galloni,"A tight, focused young red with blackcurrant, lead-pencil and chocolate character. It’s full-bodied and tense with a long, flavorful finish. 94-95 points""This is a great Talbot, a real success for the château. Subtle and deft touches throughout, from the smoked turmeric notes that lace the black fruits to the finessed aromatics that accompany the body of the wine. Balance and freshness, and a saline edge to the finish that is extremely moreish. Three years with Jean-Michel Laporte as director and he is doing great work. Drinking Window 2026 - 2040. 95 points" Jane Anson, Decanter Magazine
