2020 Château Chasse Spleen En Primeur

2020 Château Chasse-Spleen has been released En Primeur this afternoon at £240 per dozen in bond.

We found the cask sample to notably elegant and with an excellent perfume on the nose, with high-toned, blackberry fruit; then quite lively acidity, firm tannins and a chalky texture, giving it a very classical feel. Julia Harding MW for Jancisrobinson.com also comments on the same harmony and freshness, describing it as a very 'complete wine', though one which will need some time (16+ points).  Meanwhile, James Suckling awards the 2020 an extravagant 94-95 points, describing it as "A beautifully constructed young Bordeaux".

Landing in spring 2023.

Producer Profile

Château Chasse Spleen, Moulis en Médoc

Château Chasse-Spleen is a Cru Bourgeois estate in Moulis-en-Médoc.  It has a poetic name, with two often-quoted origins.  One story is that during a visit to the château, Lord Byron remarked 'Quel remède pour chasser le spleen` (roughly, 'what a remedy this place is for the blues'! Spleen relating to 'Splenetic'.  The other legend attributes the name to the poet Charles Baudelaire, visiting his artist friend Odilon Redon, a neighbour of Chasse-Spleen and illustrator of “Spleen et Idéal”, a poem by Baudelaire.

The estate is owned and run by Céline Villars Foubet and has been in her family since the 1970s.  The vineyard is halfway between Margaux and Saint-Julien, with a very varied mix of gravel, clay and limestone terroir.  The 92 hectares are planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.
