Roc de Cambes

Producer Profile

Roc de Cambes

Roc de Cambes is an estate in the commune of Côtes de Bourg, bought by Francois Mitjavile in 1988, in part because the terroir (clay and limestone) was so similar to his estate in St. Emilion, Le Tertre Roteboeuf

The wines exhibit the same Mitjavile magic, with a unique texture and aromatic complexity.  The 14 hectares of vines form a natural amphitheater overlooking the Gironde, on the slopes which form the best terroir in the Côtes de Bourg, 'les Croutes'.  The fruit for what might (inaccurately) be called the 'second wine', Domaine des Combes comes from outside the estate (and outside the Cotes de Bourg AOC) but is vinified in the same way and with the same care and attention.

Tasting NotesRich earth and humus notes on the nose alongside powerful red and black cherry fruits, with additional notes of figs, black tea. Extraordinary glycerin-like texture on the palate, with obvious full alcochol but no sense of heat or imbalance. Despite a sweatness to the fruit flavours the overall impression is entirely savoury, with tremendous length. A complete tour de force. RKL "Ripe, jammy fruit with a present but integrated toasty edge. Less expressive than some years (François Mitjavile conceded afterwards that it needed racking). Rich and round on the palate but there’s freshness as well. Tannins firm on the finish. On another day probably worth a higher score. Drink 2026 – 2034. 16+ points" jancisrobinson.com (JL) "The 2019 Roc de Cambes is focused and intense on the nose with Japanese nori tinged black fruit, damp loamy soil and later, hints of violet and incense. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins, supremely well judged acidity and an irresistible creamy texture that maintains tension on the finish. This is a sophisticated and very satisfying Roc de Cambes in the making. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample. Open and expressive. Dark fruit and toasted notes but with a chalky lift. Gourmand fruit on the palate but chalky tannins again in behind. Seductive house style but in a minor key. Drink 2027 – 2036 16+ points" jancisrobinson.com (JL)------"The 2021 Roc de Cambes has another quite Burgundy-like bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, very well defined, perfumed and pure. The caressing palate has good weight, a uncommon sense of rondeur for a 2021, and pliant, filigreed tannins on the finish. I think the 2021 vintage really suits the Roc de Cambes. A wonderful wine. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"The 2021 Roc de Cambes is shaping up beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, wild plums, rich cassis, pipe tobacco and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's a rich, sensual wine with an elegantly muscular profile, its structuring tannins largely concealed by succulent fruit. Seamless and penetrating, it's an especially elegant rendition of this superb clay-limestone terroir in the Côtes de Bourg. 91-93 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"The 2021 Roc de Cambes is fabulous. It possesses terrific depth and intensity from start to finish. Black cherry, plum, licorice, smoke, tobacco, incense and dried herbs build effortlessly in the glass. All the elements are beautifully balanced. The 2021 is so appealing today, but it clearly offers considerable potential for the future. 92-94 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2022 Roc de Cambes is a wid, exotic wine that cuplures all the natural intensity of the year Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, licorice, lavender and hard candy all race out of the glass. The 2022 is pretty exuberant, so readers should expect a flamboyant wine that approaches the sort of richness that is often found in the flagship Tertre Roteboeuf. Roc de Cambes is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. 91-93 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com------"Mingling aromas of sweet cherries and cassis with notions of licorice, espresso roast and spices, the 2022 Roc de Cambes is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a broad-shouldered profile, framed by powdery tannins, and concluding with a chalky finish. This is always the most structured wine in the Mitjaville portfolio. 92-94 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"The 2022 Roc de Cambes displays a very perfumed bouquet with black cherries and blueberry fruit, more floral than the Domaine des Cambes, iris and peony. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. Hints of iron toward the spicy finish. Very fine. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"A bigger, riper, sexier wine, the 2022 Roc De Cambes just about jumps out of the glass with its exotic red and blue fruits as well as vanilla bean, sweet spice, and acacia flower-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has beautiful tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It shows the riper, opulent style of the vintage, yet it has a core of ripe tannins and mid-palate depth that keeps it nicely focused and balanced. It's a gorgeous wine that's unfortunately hard to find in the market. 93-95 points" Jebdunnuck.com
