2022 Château Moulin St-Georges is released this morning for sale en primeur at £295 per dozen and with a highly impressive 96 points from Jane Anson, who describes it as a "luxurious feel, with velvety tannins...A well-balanced luscious wine with a saline limestone twist.
Adjacent to and owned by the same family as Ausone, this is one of those under-the-radar properties it pays to be aware of. Managed by the Vauthier family themselves, the vineyard consists of just 7 hectares of vines, averaging 50 years old, resulting in yields of just 28 hl/ha in this vintage.
The keywords from the critics are freshness, texture, and salinity, with the pH being notably low at 3.55 (in a warm year like 2022, pH levels of 3.6-3.8 in the reds are still notably low).
Despite this freshness, the 2022 Moulin St-Georges is a rich, plush wine that hints at the style of its neighbour Ausone (at £600+ per bottle!), so we can recommend this release without hesitation.
Offered en primeur, landing spring 2025.
Magnums available with £15 ex-VAT bottling surcharge, please enquire re other formats.

Tasting Notes"Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, the 2022 Moulin St Georges is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a taut, chalky profile. It should flesh out further with additional élevage. 90-92+ points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"Fresh and framed with a juiciness but also a coolness and brightness. Medium to full body. Very balanced. Well done. Lower pH at 3.52. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. 94-95 points" jamessuckling.com------"A luxurious feel, with velvety tannins, enjoyable ripe black fruits, gourmet touches of smoked vanilla root and liqourice, all well drawn out through the palate, and providing plenty of estate signature. A well balanced luscious wne with a saline limestone twist. 3.55ph, 100% new oak. 28hl/h yield, smaller than across the rest of the Ausone range because of 50 year old vines planted almost entirely by Alain Vauthier when he arrived 1970. Harvest September 19 to 26. 96 points" janeanson.com |
