2019 Brunello di Montalcino from Argiano

"The Argiano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino comes out stronger than the previous 2018 and 2017 vintages, thanks to the precision and focus of its fruit flavors in this balanced vintage...94 points."  (ML) The Wine Advocate

Our favourite estate in Brunello di Montalcino has just released its wines from the mighty 2019 vintage and we think you will want them in your cellar.  The estate's Brunello Montalcino (94 points, Vinous) is unaccountably good value at £210 per six bottles in bond, making this a Brunello you can enjoy on a frequent basis.  Argiano's collectible top cuvée from very old vines, 2019 Brunello di Montalcino 'Vigna del Suolo', scores 97 points (£695 per six) and receives an outstanding note from Vinous.com's Eric Guido, who describes it as "a Vigna del Suolo that's built for the ages".

Built from 1580 to 1596, the Argiano palace is a high point of Renaissance architecture in Tuscany. The name comes from the ancient name for the nearby Orcia River, or “Orgia”.  The wines came to prominence in the late-1800s, under Lady Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli, who won numerous awards for the wines.  From the early 1990s, it was owned by Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano, who worked with the famous Italian oenologist Giacomo Tachis (known as the father of the Super Tuscan wine movement).

In 2013, the estate was bought by Brazilian financier André Esteves, who set about restoring the palazzo and moving the estate in a sustainable direction.  Esteves' winemaker Bernardino Sani follows organic practices at the 120-hectare estate.

2019 was a hot year, but fortunately, heavy rain at the end of July averted drought.  Temperatures soared again in August, and September had both dry sun and wetter rain, followed by periods of very dry heat.  Argiano's Margherita Mascagni writes: We believe this is one of the best Brunellos ever produced at Argiano. 2019 gave us levels of elegance and finesse never reached before, and Vigna del Suolo is the utmost expression of our terroir and 1965-planted vines.

Offered pre-landing, expected late spring 2024.

Tasting Notes"The Argiano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino comes out stronger than the previous 2018 and 2017 vintages, thanks to the precision and focus of its fruit flavors in this balanced vintage. It shows ample depth and volume, with sweet cherry and blackberry that fold into softly toasted spice and earth. Floral hints of lilac and iris make brief but poignant appearances. Velvety tannins and a nicely concentrated mid-weight palate give good staying power. This is a 120,000-bottle release. 2-25-2040. 94 points." Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate, Dec '23------"Crushed ashen stones, cloves, dried black cherries, rosemary and balsam herbs create a spice box display as the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is surprisingly fresh and energetic, nearly juicy in character, yet refined and focused, with silken textures ushering in crisp wild berry fruits and orange tones that slowly saturate the palate. It finishes spicy and long, yet its energy never wavers, with grippy tannins that tug at the cheeks as licorice and cranberry notes fade 2026-2038. 94 points." Eric Guido, Vinous.com, Nov '23
