2023 Château Gloria En Primeur

"This château hasn't put a foot wrong in some time, and they certainly did well in 2023. 92-94 points" Jebdunnuck.com

Released for sale en primeur this afternoon, 2023 Château Gloria was one of several St-Julien wines that jumped out at us, with its beautiful, dark core of fruit and a fine, saline finish.  It's also superb value, at just £275 per dozen bottles in bond, or just under £23 per bottle.

Gloria is somewhat unique in being the creation of one man, Henri Martin.  Previously the manager of Latour, he had dreamt of owning his own vineyard and purchased Gloria in 1942.  Gloria's 50 hectares were acquired by Martin row by row, in many small parcels from other famous St.-Julien estates, a labour of love.  Had the estate existed in 1855 it would undoubtedly have been included in the classification and the château describes Martin as having 'invented a new cru'.

Offered en primeur.  Landing spring 2026.

Magnums available with £20 ex-VAT bottling surcharge per six, please enquire for other formats.

Château Gloria, St.-Julien

Producer Profile

Château Gloria, St.-Julien

Château Gloria is an estate in the commune of St.-Julien.  A relatively new estate, it came into being in the mid-20th century, pieced together from various parcels of vines for Henri Martin, with the help of the Cazes family.  Martin's family had a long history in the Medoc.  Previously the manager of Latour, he had dreamt of owning his own vineyard and purchased Gloria in 1942.  Gloria's 50 hectares were acquired by Marttin row by row, in many small parcels from other famous St.-Julien estates, a real labour of love.  Had the estate existed in 1855 it would undoubtedly have been included in the classification and Gloria describe Martin as having 'invented a new cru'.  In 1982 he was also able to purchase Château Saint-Pierre, a Grands Crus Classés in the same commune.

Today, Gloria is run by Martin's daughters and son-in-law and produces an average of 20,000 cases per annum.  The vineyard is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The winery has recently been renovated and quality is improving even further in recent vintages.

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Gloria presents a deep purple hue. It has a succinct bouquet with black cherries, red plum and pronounced floral aromas that emanate from the Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied with bright blackberry and raspberry fruit, quite a minerally Gloria with a more linear, stricter finish than the 2022, as you would expect. There’s also fine salinity here. This is a classy Gloria that just misses the panache of recent vintages (and of the 2023 Saint-Pierre). 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"Love this inky depths of the plummy fruits and deep rich chcolate notes, great quality with depths and balance. Last year of organic conversion. 93 points" janeanson.com------"Blackberries and blueberries with stone and sandalwood undertones. It’s medium- to full-bodied with integrated tannins that are polished and refined. Long finish. Solid and rather muscular. Could move up a notch. 93-94 points" jamessuckling.com------"Cassis, violets, spicy wood, espresso, and a kiss of graphite all emerge from the 2023 Château Gloria, an incredibly pure, medium to full-bodied, ripe, balanced Saint-Julien. It shows the pure, elegant style of the vintage, has ripe tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This château hasn't put a foot wrong in some time, and they certainly did well in 2023. 92-94 points" Jebdunnuck.com
