2023 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste En Primeur

2023 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is released for sale en primeur this morning at £273 per six bottles in bond, a reduction of nearly 24% on last year's release.

Tasting the 2023 vintage at the château last month with Emeline Borie, we found intense notes of fresh red and black fruits, menthol, cedar, and black pepper on the nose, and a polished, silky-textured palate, with more supple tannins than many Pauillacs we tasted at a comparable level.  This vintage will delight lovers of classic GPL, with its 'Atlantic' style on some saline notes on the finish.

Talking with Emeline, she reminded us that GPL routinely sells 100% of its stock en primeur, rather than holding a proportion back as others do; a straightforward approach, in line with the integrity they show each year on pricing.  The wines are routinely under-priced, making this year's reduction even more worthy of note.   We wholeheartedly recommend adding the 2023 to your cellar.

Offered en primeur, landing spring 2026.

Magnums available with £20 ex-VAT bottling surcharge per six, please enquire for other formats.

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac

Producer Profile

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a Cinquième Cru Classé in Pauillac.  The name Grand-Puy ('puy') comes from the Latin podium, or hill, describing this vineyard’s privileged location overlooking Pauillac. Included in the 1855 classification, Grand-Puy-Lacoste previously belonged to a family who contributed several members to the Bordeaux parliament. They fell in love with the magnificent gravel terroir and were responsible for establishing the wine’s reputation. They were followed by several other families: the Lacostes (who gave the estate its definitive name), the Saint-Guirons, and the Saint-Legiers.

From 1930 to 1978 the château was owned by Raymond Dupin. Shortly before his death, he sold Grand-Puy-Lacoste to the Borie family.  François-Xavier Borie, the present owner, has made major investments and constantly improved the quality of Grand-Puy-Lacoste in order to reflect all the finesse of its great Pauillac terroir.  The 90-hectare estate is planted at a density of 10,000 vine per hectare, to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, with vines averaging 38 years of age.  The wine is aged in 75% new oak barrels.

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked September 11 to 28 at 48hL/ha and matured in 75% new oak. It has a classic "GPL" bouquet with blackberry, pencil box and light marine scents, obviously not as powerful as the previous vintage, yet in typical style, beautifully defined and focused. Just a touch of cracked black pepper surfaces with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle but insistent grip, just a light bitter edge lending tension and nerve. I perceive good depth here, but this is not a powerhouse of a Pauillac (is GPL ever?). It fans out toward the finish whilst maintaining control. There’s an impressive linearity to this wine, and thus I suspect it will require less bottle-age compared to recent vintages. 93-95 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"Aromas of cassis, cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and violets introduce the 2023 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple wine that's seamless and sensual, with good depth at the core, beautifully integrated tannins and a lively, charming profile. It's a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot that was picked between September 11-28. 93-95 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"Beautiful purity and freshness to the blackcurrants and blackberries with subtle notes of cedar and graphite. Medium- to full-bodied. So polished and silky, almost weightless. It’s very long. 77% cabernet sauvignon and 23% merlot. 95-96 points" jamessuckling.com
