2023 Château La Gaffelière En Primeur

"One of the stars of the vintage...94-97 points" Jebdunnuck.com

"...another in a succession of impressive wines from this estate that just oozes sensuality. Superb. 94-96 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Released this morning for sale en primeur, 2023 Château La Gaffelière is offered at £270 per six bottles in bond, a 21% reduction on the opening price for the '22 vintage.  This estate has over-delivered on quality to price in recent vintages and with excellent scores, the new release would be excellent value without a reduction, so this is very welcome.

La Gafféliere's vineyards are nestled in between Pavie and Ausone, at the foot of the Pavie plateau.  Previously ranked a St-Emilon Premier Grand Cru Classé (B), the estate left the controversial St-Emilion classification last year, along with several famous names like Cheval Blanc

The style always tends towards elegance, with complex, layered floral aromas, and saline and mineral notes.  If you are yet to be converted to drinking right-bank wines regularly, La Gaffelière will convert you to the amazing elegance and precision of contemporary winemaking in St-Emilion, with its endless layers and refined texture.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to order.

Offered en primeur, on allocation.  Landing spring 2026.

Magnums available with £20 ex-VAT bottling surcharge per six, please enquire for other formats.

Château La Gaffelière

Producer Profile

Château La Gaffelière

Château La Gaffelière was a premier grand cru classé (B) estate in St-Emilion until it opted to leave the classification in 2022.  The vineyards were first established in the Roman era.  It has been owned since the 17th century by the family of the Comte de Malet-Roquefort.  The current owner is Léo de Malet-Roquefort.  The 19 hectares of vines are planted to 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, on a mix of clay, limestone and chalk soils.   After a difficult patch in the 1980s, quality has improved, particularly under Alexandre de Malet-Roquefort.

Tasting Notes"Love the depth and the vibrant fruit character here, and the vivid reflections to the colour. Chalky, fresh, extremely vibrant, real mineral pumice stone textire, and a clear reminder of its limestone soils. Aged in barrels and large oak casks. Tasted twice. Now withdrawn from the St Emilion classification. Alexandre de Malet-Roquefort owner. 94 points" janeanson.com------"The center-palate reflects excellent terroir, with blackberry, black-olive and walnut aromas and flavors. Tight centerpalate with firm but creamy tannins and a flavorful, classy finish. 94-95 points" jamessuckling.com------"The 2023 La Gaffelière is very pure and floral on the nose, with black cherries intermingling with violet and iris flower scents. The new oak is neatly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and layers of lightly spiced black fruit. Cedar and graphite furnish the poised but persistent finish. This is another in a succession of impressive wines from this estate that just oozes sensuality. Superb. 94-96 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"One of the stars of the vintage, the 2023 Château La Gaffelière checks in as 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc resting in 50% new barrels. Cassis, smoked black fruits, graphite, and crushed stone all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, layered, concentrated mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. It has a lot of oak but more than enough fruit and texture. It's serious stuff. 94-97 points" Jebdunnuck.com
